Census in 1940 in West Mahanoy Twp., Schuylkill, PA. ⁶ In the 1940 Census in West Mahanoy Township was recorded Arthur Beacher, age 56, retired, living with wife Lotte, 49; son Paul, 20, clerk in lumber company; daughter Jean, 15; plus son Arthur Beacher, 31, laborer in coal mine, and his wife Dot, 33, and their daughter Joan, 6. Also in the home is Arthur Sr's daughter Joan Balliet and her husband, John Balliet, 33, clerk in lumber company, and their child John Jr., 7. Everyone was born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, except Lottie Beacher in Roaring Creek, Pennsylvania; John Jr. Balliet and Joan Beacher in Shenandoah Heights; and John Balliet Sr. In 1935 everyone lived in Shenandoah Heights.

2. Census in 1950 in Shenandoah Heights, Schuylkill County, PA. ¹⁴ The 1950 census recorded at 208 Ohio Avenue: Arthur Beacher, laborer n lumber company, 66, living with wife Lottie, 59; son-in-law John Balliet, office clerk in lumber company, 44 and his wife Evelyn, 40; and their son John Balliet, 17; and son-in-law Fred Gibbons, colliery laborer in coal industry, 26, and his wife Jean, sews sleves in dress factory, 25. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania.

The Balliets of Tamaqua
In the U. S. Census of 1860, Pennsylvania, Schuylkill County, North Ward of Tamaqua is found the following entry:
"Mrs. Isabella Balliet, 30, Pa.; John Balliet 8, Pa; Asbey 5, Pa; Henry 3, Pa"
In the 1880 U.S. Census Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County, are two entries which seem to be of the same family:
"Thomas Kerchner; Isabella Kerchner; Asberry Balliet 26, stepson" and
"John Baliard 28, wed, Pa; Harriet 26, wife, Eng. Eng. Eng; Gertrude 6, da. Pa; Asberry 5, son, Pa; Martha J. 2 da, Pa"
These three records indicate that the husband of Mrs. Isabella Balliet died sometime between the years of 1857 and 1860, leaving three sons: John, Asberry, and Henry Balliet. Sometime before 1880 Mrs. Isabella Balliet married Thomas Kerchner.
The "John Balliet, age 8" and the "John Baliard" age 28 in 1880 are undoubtedly one and the same. No further trace of Henry was found, nor is the name of their father known.

John was born in 1852 and died in 1924 at Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. He married Harriet Grundy, daughter of Adam Grundy. Harriet was born about 1864 in England and came to America with her parents. She died in 1926 at Shenandoah. They had four children, all born in Pennsylvania: Gertrude, born 1874; Asberry, born 1875; Martha J., born 1878; and:

Adam was born in 1881 at Shenandoah, Pennsylvania and died there June 25, 1951. He married Susan Major, daughter of Albert Major. Susan was born February 4, 1882, Shenandoah and died there June 17, 1963. Issue, two children: Harriet Balliet, born August 10, 1910, died March, 1935; and

John, born October 27, 1906, Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, married Evelyn Bernice Beacher at Shenandoah, where she was born November 19, 1910, the daughter of Arthur Garfield Beacher (b. 7/20/1883, Shenandoah) and Lottie Mabel Wagner (b. Sept. 1890, Shenandoah). John and Evelyn live at 23 W. Coal, Shenandoah, Pennsylvania and have a son:

John, born December 23, 1932, Shenandoah, married Carol Ann Buckenberger on December 12, 1959 at Danville, Pennsylvania where Carol was born August 3, 1940, the daughter of John Joseph and Hazel Elizabeth Dyer Buckenberger. John and Carol reside at 320 E. Center, Danville, Pennsylvania, where their daughter was born:

4. Obituary: Pottsville Republican: obituary of John A. Balliet on 11 Feb 1978 in Pottsville, Schuylkill, PA. ¹³ John A. Balliet, 23 W. Coal St., Shenandoah, died Friday night at Locust Mountain Hospital. Mr. Balliet was born in Yatesville, son of the late Adam and Susan Major Balliet and was educated in the East Mahanoy Township schools. He had been employed for 52 years by the Ratzburg Lumber Co. He was a member of First Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows Lodge and Rescue Hook and Ladder Co. Surviving are his widow, the former Evelyn Beacher; one son, John, of Bloomsburg, and four grandchildren. Services will be held Tuesday morning from the Oravitz Home for Funerals with the Rev. James Mort, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
