When quite young, he came with his parents to Ohio where they lived for some time. When about the age of 20, he came to Lima and began working as a clerk for Mr. W. H. Deputy, who was a well known citizen. He steadily worked his way up until he became the leading dry goods merchant in Lima.
June 30, 1855, he was married to Adelaide P. Acheson, who died March 8, 1895, and to them four surviving children were born, Charles, Edward, Frances and Kitty, all of whom survive him.
During the last few years of his life he was in ill health and went a number of times to Mt.
