THOMAS DEVINE

Thomas Devine [Jr.] is the owner of the Beale Hotel in Kingman and conducts the enterprise in an able and farsighted way. He was born in Michigan in 1869 and is a son of Thomas and Martha (Dobbin) Devine, who left that state for Kansas in 1873, settling in St. Marys. The father was in early life a farmer but afterward turned his attention to the hotel and grocery business, operating enterprises of that character in Kansas City, Kansas until his retirement.

An Old Resident of Cross Creek

Thos. Devine was born in Tipperara, Ireland, Dec. 22, 1842 and came to this country with his parents when a small boy and settled in Kalamazoo, Mich., where he lived until he enlisted and served three years in the Civil War from which he had an honorable discharge, he later returned to Kalamazoo and married Martha Dobbins Feb. 27, 1865, where he resided for several years, and then moved to Cross Creek, where he lived for several years on a farm now owned by John Lindquest of Emmett. Later they moved to Kansas City, where he conducted a grocery store in which he was very successful. He retired on Dec., 1, 1902

Jan. 25 he was stricken with Paralysis and confined to his chair until the time of his death which occurred Nov. 1. His long suffering, patience and resignation to the Will of the Almighty not only won him merits, but centralized upon his family the deepest sentiments of sorrow. Besides his bereaved widow he leaves six children to mourn his loss, they are: Mrs. J. Dowling of Leavenworth; John of Kansas City; Thomas of Kingman, Ariz; Mrs. D. Hays; Mrs. F. Swanson and Mrs. S. C. Hays of Kansas City.

Tributes of respect were shown by the many beautiful floral offerings, which were sent from far and near. The funeral took place Wednesday morning with a Requim High Mass at St. Benedict Church celebrated by Rev. Father Patrick. The remains were laid to rest in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

The pall bearers were William McHale, Patrick Fogarty, H. A. Mulligan, Thos. Devine, John Cosgrove and Edward Flynn.

Mrs. J. G. Clark, Mrs. F. McLoughlin, Mrs. E. Dowling, and John Cosgrove of Emmett attended the funeral.

The deceased is widely known here and in this vicinity and all will be grieved to learn of his death.


Thomas married Martha Dobbins on 27 Feb 1865 in , Kalamazoo, MI.1 (Martha Dobbins was born in 1837 in , , , IRL,2 4 died in 1927 in Kansas City, Wyandotte, KS 4 and was buried on 20 Jan 1927 in Kansas City: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wyandotte, KS 4.). The cause of her death was pneumonia.
