The Katherine Beecher Company, maker of butter mints and other candies, moves into a new factory. Katherine Beecher began making mints for her friends and neighbors in 1930. The demand grew, and Beecher's husband, Henry W., hit the road to market the candy more broadly. The Beechers sold their candy to Army PX stores and Navy ship commissaries. They were thereby able to secure sugar during the war years. Their government contracts introduced their candy on a national scale. "She was right on top of everything," a son later recalled. "She was at home among the salesmen. She could meet with them and discuss the business and the problems with customers and she always came up with an answer."

MANCHESTER, April 5 -- Henry Ward Beecher, husband of Katharine Jacoby Beecher, died at 6 p. m. yesterday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md., following an illness of many weeks. Death was due to a complication of diseases. He was 62 years old. Mr. Beecher was born in Seven Valleys, son of the late John H. and Ella M. Godfrey Beecher. He spent his early life in New Freedom and later resided in Toronto, Canada; Louiisville, Ky. and Greensboro, N. C. Mr. Beecher and his family returned to York county in 1930 and settled in Manchester in 1931 where he and Mrs. Beecher founded the Katharine Beecher Butter Mint Candy Company. The deceased was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and the Union Fire Company here. He was also a member of Greensboro Lodge 76, F. and A. M. Greensboro, N. C. He served a term on the Manchester borough council and was vitally interested in all community affairs to which he lent his energetic support. Besides his widow he leaves two sons, Henry J. Beecher, Manchester, and David L. Beecher, at home, and a sister, Miss Grace Beecher, Harrisburg. Funeral services will be held at the Zeigler Funeral Home here at 2 p. m. Friday. His pastor, the Rev. Samuel R. Frank, will officiate. Interment will be in Manchester Union Cemetery.
