FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - A two-alarm fire Monday morning caused an estimated $150,000 damage to a Greene Township home, according to Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Co. Deputy Chief William Wishard.

Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Stanford Sydnor said the fire at the home of Glenn Beecher Jr. at 7228 Lincoln Way East appears to have started in the master bedroom to the rear of house. He said Monday morning that the cause of the fire was undetermined, but it did not appear suspicious.

Sydnor said Beecher's father-in-law went to the house, smelled smoke and called 911. The alarm was dispatched at 8:53 a.m., Wishard said.

An ambulance crew was the first unit to arrive at the scene and found light smoke inside the wood-frame house, Wishard said. When the first fire engine arrived, firefighters ran a hose inside the house to try to extinguish the flames.

A second alarm was issued when it was determined more personnel was needed to fight the fire, which took about 45 minutes to bring under control, Wishard said.

The back of the house was gutted by the fire and there appeared to be substantial smoke damage to the front, as well. At least one vehicle parked directly behind the house appeared to have been heavily damaged by fire.

"We have electric heat, but it wasn't on," Beecher said as he stood in his yard. Beecher said no one was in the home when the fire was discovered.

The only injury reported was to a New Franklin Volunteer Fire Co. firefighter, who was taken to Chambersburg Hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion, Wishard said. Wishard did not release the firefighter's name.

Traffic along Lincoln Way East was backed up more than a mile west of the fire. Emergency vehicles lined the south side of the highway while the fire was being brought under control and during the cleanup afterward.

The last units left the scene at about 12:45 p.m.

Fayetteville was assisted by units from the Franklin, New Franklin, Mont Alto, Marion and South Mountain fire companies, as well as the West End and Vigilant Hose companies from Shippensburg, Pa., and the Franklin County Air Unit, Wishard said.

Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that destroyed a home at 7228 Lincoln Way East on Monday morning. "It's pretty much all gone," said homeowner Glenn Beecher. "I've lost everything. My wife (Doris) and I have been married almost 20 years." Irreplaceable are the family photos and other personal items, Beecher said today. The Beechers and their son, Justin, are staying with relatives. Fayetteville Fire Department officials estimate the loss at $150,000. The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause. A Fayetteville firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, but was later released. Traffic was delayed on U.S. 30 near the fire for about an hour. Randy Beecher, Glenn Beecher's brother, said he took a quick look from his front yard down the street Monday morning toward his brother's home, and saw his sister-in-law, Doris, standing in front of the house, looking distressed. He ran to her side, which is when he first saw smoke and flames billowing from the one-story home. He took his sister-in-law to his house, 7263 Lincoln Way East, then returned to the fire scene. He noticed his brother's cocker spaniel running around outside. Scooping the dog up, Randy placed him inside his pickup truck for safety. Glenn Beecher was at work when the fire started.. It was Randy who called him to let him know his home was gone. Fayetteville firefighters arrived at the fire about 8:53 a.m., according to a fire company spokesman. Fire fighters were able to bring the blaze under control within 45 minutes, but the house was destroyed. Randy Beecher said Doris Beecher and her father were in the house when the fire started, but were able to get out safely. There is nothing left of the house," he said. "The church brought over some blankets for us and the Red Cross was there, too. I don't know where Glenn and his family are going to live. They might live with me or they might move in with our parents. I'm just glad no one was injured."
