Read law under his brother, James Tupper. Married Sarah C. Doar, daughter of Elias M. Doar, of Santee, South Carolina. July 30, 1860. He was president of the Phoenix Fire Insurance company, of Charleston; was auditor of Colleton County; trial justice of Summerville; intendant of town of Summerville two terms; treasurer of town of Summerville six terms; president of Dorchester Democratic Club twelve years. Entered Confederate service, as private, in 1861, joining the Charleston Light Dragoons. In May, 1861, he was promoted to second lieutenant of South Carolina Rangers. Promoted to first lieutenant, June, 1862, and in February, 1863, was promoted to captain of Company D., Fifth Carolina Cavalry. He was present at the capture of Fort Sumter, Yemassee and other places: in Virginia, at Winchester, Cedar Creek, Rappahannock, and many other battles. In North Carolina he participated in the battle of Averysboro, Bentonville, and many skirmishes. He was badly wounded twice. Was taken prisoner but escaped the night of his capture, and joined his command the next day. He was detailed June 30, to blow up the Ironsides of Charleston Harbor, by General Beauregard, because of her deadly fire on our works. He served until the surrender of Johnson's army, April 27, 1865. When South Carolina passed the Ordinance of Secession, December 20, 1860, at St. Andrews Hall, in Charleston, South Carolina, he conveyed the information to the "Charleston Courier," on East Bay; and a salute of seven guns was immediately fired. He was one of the twelve members of the Charleston Light Dragoons, who volunteered to relieve the exhausted gunners on the "Floating Battery," in the second day's siege of Fort Sumter. He was commissioned colonel of the First Regiment of Mounted Rifles, Volunteer State Troops, by Governor Wade Hampton, on the 16th of June, 1877. He organized the General James Connor Camp United Carolina Volunteers, in April, 1893; and was its first commander, serving until 1897. Appointed presidential elector, in 1900, but declined.
