Strayer, a skywriter and former operator of air taxis, died Thursday in Chapel Hill, N.C., following a short illness. Mr. Strayer, who had been a resident of Goldens Bridge, N.Y., was 73 years old.

He served with the Air Force in World War II and was with Grumman Aircraft as a test pilot.

He later began operating charter flights and air taxis in the New York metropolitan area. He had toured the country for the last decade in an antique open-cockpit plane as a skywriter for the Pepsi-Cola Company.

Mr. Strayer, who was born in New York City, was a graduate of William and Mary College and also attended Columbia University. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and two brothers, Joseph of Princeton, N.J., and George of Seattle.
