SOUTH DEERFIELD - Arthur L. "Beech" Beechert, Jr., died Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, at the Soldier's Home in Holyoke.

Born Aug. 20, 1925, in Queens, New York, the son of the late Arthur and Mae (Cody) Beechert. He was educated and graduated as a member of the Senior Arista Honor Society from Richmond Hill High School in 1942.

Having moved from New York to Connecticut to Cape Cod and finally South Deerfield, 15 years ago, Beech always felt that South Deerfield was the nicest and friendliest town he ever lived in.

Beech joined the U.S. Navy and served in the submarine service as a torpedo man aboard the USS Kingfish during World War II. He was discharged in March 1946. He was a member of the U.S. Sub Vets of World War II and of U.S. Sub Vets, Inc.

Beech attended Pace College on the GI Bill, graduating with a bachelor's in accounting in June 1950. Hired by Felt and Tarrant Manufacturing, he sold comptometer business machines for 10 years, rising to both branch and regional manager. The balance of his career was as regional manager for Victor Temps and Olsten Temporaries. He ended his career as the owner of his own company Beechert Executive Placement until his retirement in 1990.

Beech played semi-pro baseball for 10 years in the Queens Alliance. He was an all-star and was offered a minor league contract by the Dodgers, (he was hitting over .500 as a singles hitting left-handed first baseman).

He was predeceased by his wife of 20 years, Joyce (Schuh) Beechert who died in 2003, and his partner for 30 years, Lois Duncan who passed away in 2007.

Beech is survived by his loving daughter Debora Lichtenberg and son-in-law Andrew of Pelham, and two grandsons, Drew of Washington D.C., and Nick and his wife Alison Bennett of Los Angeles, California. He also leaves brothers Jack and Dan and their families as well as the family of his sister Joyce (who he was closest to while growing up). who died in 1988.

After a veteran's farewell at the Soldiers Home, final arrangements have been made with the Wrisley Funeral Home in South Deerfield.

Donations may be made to the Soldier's Home in Holyoke, MA.
