Census in 1900 in Elm Township, Gage, NE. 3 The 1900 census recorded Elias Smith, farmer, 45, born Feb 1855, living with wife Martha, 42, Sep 1858. They were married for 26 years and had given birth to 3 children by 1900, and 2 were living with them: son Vernia O., 21, Sep 1879; and son Herbert S., 16, Jan 1884. Everyone and their parents were born in Indiana, except Elias' father was born in Kentucky and mother in Virginia. 2. Census in 1920 in York, York, NE. 5 The 1920 census recorded living at 1017 Maryland Avenue: H. S. Smith, telegraph operator, 35, born as were his parents in Indiana, living with his family all born in Nebraska: wife Eva E., 33; son Arthur R., 12; and daughters E. Ester, 11, and Beryl May, 4. Eva's parents were born in New York. 3. Census in 1930 in Seward, Seward, NE. 6 The 1930 census recorded Herbert Smith, railroad operator, 46, living with wife Eva, 44; daughter Beryl, 14; daughter Esther, 21; son Darrell, 8; daughter Doris, 5; and son Howard, 2. Also in the home is lodger John O'Dell, 10. Everyone was born in Nebraska except Herbert and his parents in Indiana, and Eva's parents in New York. 4. Census in 1940 in Archer, Merrick, NE. 7 The 1940 census recorded H. S. Smith, railroad depot agent, 56, living with wife Eva E., 54; Beryl M., 24; Darrel S., 18; Doris M., 14; and Howard L., 12. Everyone was born in Nebraska except H.S. in Indiana. In 1935 the family was living in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. Herbert married Eva Elizabeth O'Dell, daughter of Robert O'Dell Jr. and Caroline Augusta Lansing, on 14 Feb 1906 in Seward, Seward, NE. (Eva Elizabeth O'Dell was born on 21 Jan 1886 in Seward, Seward, NE,8 died on 28 May 1959 in York, York, NE 8 and was buried in York: Greenwood Cemetery, York, NE 8.) |
