Born in Suzhou, China on July 23, 1912, she was the youngest of six children. Her parents, Charles and Nancy McDaniel were Baptist missionaries. She married Wesley Frank Craven on May 30, 1931. Mr. Craven preceded her in death on February 10, 1981.
Helen began her preschool teaching career in 1953 in Princeton, N.J. Two year olds were her favorite age group, and she loved teaching them music and movement. Her most rewarding experience in education was helping to found and administrate the Princeton Junior School. After retiring she moved to Carol Woods in 1993. She loved music and played in recorder societies for many years.
Her other love besides family was traveling. Her sisterin-law, and in later years, her daughter Betty, accompanied her on visits to many places around the world, including China.
Helen is survived by daughters, Nancy Beecher (husband Bill), of Madison, Wis., and Betty Barber (husband Norris), of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Kimberly Bellefeuille (Ron), Tracy Kok (Matt), Kirsten Lenz (Scott) and Eric Barber (Wendy); six great grandchildren; a dear friend she originally met in China, Dr. Campbell McMillan (wife, Florence); loving niece, Martha Yeatts (Benjamin); nephews, Berkeley and James Cone; and special lifelong friends, John and Nancy Eills.
The family thanks the staff at Carol Woods, where Helen lived her last 12 wonderful years, for their loving care.

Born in Suzhou, China, she was the youngest of six children born of Baptist missionaries. She began her preschool teaching career in 1953 in Princeton, N.J.
She helped found and administer the Princeton Junior School. She retired to Carol Woods in 1993.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Beecher of Madison, Wis., and Betty Barber of Portland, Ore; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
