Caleb Musser was in the city yesterday. His account of the hostile meeting between him and Hon. Cyrus Cook, at Cynthiana day before yesterday, represents that Cook crossed the street to where Musser was standing, drew his pistol, and fired without a word. He thinks the immediate provocation was that he was an adverse witness in a suit of Taylor against Cook involving large interests. 4. Newspaper: The Climax, 5 Mar 1890, Richmond, Madison, KY, USA. Years ago when the new Methodist Church was built in Cynthiana a debt of 1300 remained on the hands of the committee. The church had been severely taxed to build the edifice and in order to secure funds to pay off the remaining debt, it was proposed to present a $50 cane to the most popular man in Harrison county, the choice to be selected by votes, and every person permitted to vote as often as he wished provided he paid a stipulated price for each vote. Hon. T. F. Megibben, Hon. Thomas V. Ashbrook, Caleb Musser and Louis Pollmeyer were nominated as candidates by their friends. It was a hot contest, the candidates leading as their names are mentioned. Excitement reached a white heat and when the voting ceased, it was found that Megibben had polled 5,000 votes, Ashbrook between 4,000 and 5,000, Musser 2,500, Pollmeyer 555. The net amount realized was $1,300, the amount of the church indebtedness. The cane was presented to Mr. Megibben. He had previously given $1,000 to the church, besides $1,200 toward the construction of the new Christian Church in Cynthiana. -- Maysville Bulletin. 5. Newspaper: Henderson Evening Journal, 8 Sep 1909, Henderson, Henderson, KY, United States. Since the demolition of the old public school building began, six weeks ago, there has been much speculation about the bottle of whisky known to have been inclosed in the wall of the south wing when It was built thirty-seven years ago. Caleb Musser was Mayor of Cynthiana at that time, and he put the bottle of whisky in the wall. It was found Friday morning by one of the workmen. J. R. Poindexttr, who is demolishing the building, was called and he superintended the uncovering of the precious package. It was a half pint bottle and contained about a teaspoonful of liquor. All the resa had evaporated through the cork, and this town is just as "dry" as it lever was. Mr. Poindexter presented the bottle to Carl Musser, son of the former Mayor. -- Cynthiana Democrat. Caleb married Laura Permelia Cook, daughter of Cyrus Beecher Cook and Permelia Catherine Knight, on 3 Oct 1866 in Cynthiana, Harrison, KY.1 (Laura Permelia Cook was born on 1 Aug 1847 in Clarke, Virginia, United States,5 died on 21 Oct 1896 in Cynthiana, Harrison, KY 5 and was buried in Cynthiana: Battle Grove Cemetery, Harrison, KY 5.) |
