7. Newspaper: Weekly Herald, 21 Dec 1901, Shenandoah, Schuylkill, PA. 11 BOROUGH ENGINEERS INTEND TO RESIGN
If Their Separate Requests for a Raise in Wages are not Granted
A regular meeting of Council was held last night, with these members present: Messrs. Neiswenter, Magargle, Burke, Watson, Uraitis, Czeppukaitis, Reeves, Fishburn and Tracey. Secretary Bierstein, Water Superintendent Kehler and Policeman Hand were in attendance. Mr. Neiswenter was elected president pro tem, in the absence of President James, who is wrestling with the rheumatism at his home.
ENGINEERS MAY RESIGN. The following communication was read:
Gentlemen: I wish to call your attention to the fact that I do not wish to retain my position as pumping engineer at the Brandonville pumping station, at the present rate of wages, any longer than up to January 1, 1902. Believing that I am entitled to a better recompense than receiving at the present time, taking into consideration the expense of keeping a horse and outfit, and the hardship I have to endure in order to get to and from my work and then 24 hours in a cold, uncomfortable building, which is often coated inside with frost one-half inch thick, and we are supposed to look after the whole plant and keep it in running order to have a supply of water on hand; and in fact the plant is left in our care and keeping. Therefore, I would say that seventy dollars per month would not be asking too much. Of course, you people are the judges. I am perfectly satisfied whichever way you decide.
Should it be against me I would recommend Edward Hanley, one of my present firemen, for the position, knowing him to be a steady and industrious man, and, also, believing him to be competent for the place. Thanking your honorable body for all past courtesies, I remain
Yours, etc.
BENJ. F. WOOMER.
N. B. I am speaking for myself individually.
