The Suffolk County grand jury late yesterday indicted the handsome blond radio operator of the Dutch freighter Utrecht, for the slaying of pretty 23-year-old Lynn Kauffman as the tragic climax to a torrid love affair. The first degree murder indictment against Willem Marie Louis Van Rie, 30, was reported to Judge Lewis Goldbert in Suffolk Superior Court after he heard testimony from six witnesses presented by Dist. Atty. Garret H. Byrne and two assistants.

Mrs. Juanita Spector, wife of Prof. Stanley Spector, the employer of Miss Kauffman, who with her three children was a shipmate of the victim on the 43-day voyage from Singapore to Boston. Prof. Spector, who had an injured knee, had flown home earlier.
Mrs. Spector was dressed entirely in black, wearing a black skirt and sweater, black pumps and stockings and a black beaded straw hat.
She was escorted to the grand jury room by Det. Thomas Davis of the homicide squad, and becoming confused by the flashing bulbs of the newmen's cameras, made a wrong turn. Det. Davis took her by the arm and guided her into the grand jury room, where she remained 32 minutes.

A suit for divorce by Stanley Spector, associate professor of Far Eastern Affairs at Washington University, was on file in circuit court at Clayton today. Alleging general Indignities, the petition said Mrs. Spector had been quarrelsome and accused him falsely about association with other women. He asked that his wife, Juanita, receive custody of their three minor children and that the court fix reasonable alimony and support payments. Spector is 37 years old, his wife 40. The Spec tor home is at 6300 Southwood avenue, Clayton. Mrs. Spector was a witness at the murder trial of Willem Van Rie, radio operator in a Dutch ship, in the death of Mrs. Lynn Kauffman, 23-year-old divorcee, who had been Specter's research assistant. Her badly beaten body was found in Boston harbor Sept. 19, 1959. She had accompanied Mrs. Spector and the Spector children on a 44-day voyage from the Orient. Spector had returned by air. Van Rie was acquitted of the murder charge requisite Fall 1961.
