Girl to get $155,000 in settlement
-----
CARLISLE - A Shippensburg girl will receive $155,000 over the next 29 years as part of a compromise settlement approved Tuesday by Cumberland County Judge Edgar Bayley. In a brief hearing, Bayley accepted the settlement between Peoples Drug Stores Inc. and Terry and Gloria Beecher, R.R. 6, Shippensburg. The Beechers filed the suit in January on behalf of their 4-year-old daughter, Nicole, who overdosed after a Peoples pharmacist gave her five times the prescribed dosage of medication to treat hypothyroidism. Under the settlement, Peoples will pay Nicole $40,000 immediately and $1 15,000 in five payments between the years 2006 and 2018. Nicole would receive $10,000 in 2006, $15,000 in 2009, $20,000 in 2012, $25,000 in 2015, and $45,000 in 2018. The suit states that in March 1987, Nicole suffered from hypothyroidism and her physician prescribed 0.025 milligrams of Synthroid daily. In an answer to the original suit filed this June, the company admitted its pharmacist gave a dosage equivalent to 0.125 milligrams daily. The pharmacist worked at the Peoples store at 59 E. King St., Shippensburg. Nicole became sluggish after taking the medication. She was taken to Chambersburg Hospital on March 17, 1987, and was transferred by ambulance to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where she remained until March 23. The suit said Nicole suffered from a metabolic imbalance because of the overdose. Gloria Beecher told Bayley on Tuesday that Nicole appeared in good health, but that a physician said there was a chance there could be some neurological effects later. Peoples attorney James D. Flower ot -Carlisle said the agreement was not an admission of liability. He said he did not -know if the pharmacist was still employed at Peoples. The Beechers' attorney, William A. Addams of Carlisle, would not comment on the amount of the legal and medical bills that would be paid out of the initial $40,000. The settlement states that the family incurred $9,521.44 in medical expenses, and $13,970.75 in legal fees related to the case. Bayley asked the family if it was satisfied with the settlement and Gloria replied that she was more concerned about Nicole's health.

9. Newspaper: The Sentinel: Probe continues into Tuesday's fatal fire, 19 Dec 2001, Carlisle, Cumberland, PA. 13 A Shippensburg Township man was found dead inside his mobile home Tuesday after firefighters brought the blaze under control. The body of a man found inside a Shippensburg Township mobile home destroyed by fire Tuesday morning has been identified as Lloyd Gehrke, 38. Cumberland County Coroner Michael Norris confirmed that firefighters discovered the remains of the man when they responded to the 6:09 a.m. blaze at 15 Dykeman Road near the intersection of South Fayette Street. Gehrke was the sole resident of the dwelling, according to Norris. The cause of death and the origin of the fire remain under investigation by the coroner and state police fire marshal Nolan Brewbaker of the Carlisle station. Greg Coy, Vigilant Hose Co. fire chief, said "fire was blowing out of the front" of the mobile home when his units arrived. He said the first emergency dispatch described the call as a mobile home fire, but a subsequent update from dispatch included a "possible entrapment" alert. He indicated the body was found "in about the middle" of the home. A K-9 unit from Harrisburg arrived at the scene about by 9 a.m., but officials there would not say exactly for what the dog were searching. Volunteers from Cumberland Valley Hose Co., Cumberland Valley ambulance and West End Fire and Rescue Co. assisted Vigilant Hose Co. personnel at the scene. Borough Fire Chief Jamie White, of WEFR, was one of the first to respond at the scene. He sustained second-degree burns on his neck and wrists when he entered the rear of the burning home. According to White, WEFR firefighters Charlie Westcott and Bob Rohr were already at the scene when he arrived. "Justin Martin and I were the first there with air packs so we were the first to go in," White said. He said the fire's intensity prevented them from getting to the victim's body located closer to the front of the mobile home. Coy said it look about 15 minutes to bring the blaze under control and about 30 minutes before the fire was extinguished. "Once we knew there was a body, we had to be careful not to disturb the scene," Coy said. Gehrke worked at T and G Auto Sales for the last two years, said Eddie Albright and Wende Shatzer, the brother-and-sister management team of the used-car business at 409 S. Fayette St. Gehrke's residence, located behind the car lot, is owned by Gloria Beecher, who also owns T and G. "He was not just an employee; he was like family," said a grieving Shatzer, adding Gehrke "did everything here," but worked mostly as a detailer.
