22. Newspaper: The Sentinel: Crash Injures 8 at Dragway, 23 Jul 1990, Carlisle, Cumberland, PA. 24 A dragster spun out of control and crashed into the pits at South Mountain Dragway, injuring eight people, one seriously, on Saturday night.
A 1965 Chevy Coupe, driven by Gordon Foose, 40, spun out of control, flipping several times and flew over the guardrail, landing in the pit area beside the track, say a State Police at Carlisle report and several eye witnesses.
Foose, of Wayne Highway, Waynesboro, had minor injuries and was treated at the South Middleton Township dragway, he says.
The accident may have been caused by a broken part, says co-owner Edward Stambaugh, who was not at the race. Ronald Wallace, who was present, suggests the dragster may have lost traction.
Opponents to unrestricted expansion of the 1107 Petersburg Road dragway are using the accident as an example of their concerns. They have criticized the use of lights that allow races to finish after dark, saying there could be safety problems at the track.
This was the first time that the lights have been used during a race, says Stambaugh, who notes it was not completely dark when they were turned on.
But Stambaugh says their concerns have "nothing to do with having an accident at the track. I don't think it's fair to piece the two together. It would have happened regardless."
Two South Middleton Township supervisors Chairman Hal Mortimore and James Baker also expressed concerns after the accident. They pointed to a possible need to tighten safety regulations governing the dragstrip.
Supervisor Dale Jones Jr. agreed with Stambaugh that "accidents happen."
Most of those involved in the accident had minor injuries, according to state police.
However, Paula Ripman, 24, of the first block of West Canal Street, Dover, is listed in serious condition at Hershey Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. She was flown there in the Life Lion helicopter after being pinned between a stationary dragster and the one that went out of control, says Wendy Beecher, 19, a witness to the crash.
Nancy E. Border, 37, of Wayne Highway, Waynesboro, is in fair condition in the special care unit of Carlisle Hospital. She was pinned underneath the wheel of the stationary dragster, which belonged to Miss Beecher's father, Terry, the witness adds.
John Border, 1500 block of Lisburn Road, Wellsville, 20, was reported to have moderate injuries, according to police. Foose says Border was at Carlisle Hospital reporting to him on Nancy Border's condition.
Patricia Thomas, 41, of the first block of Lenwood Park, Shippensburg, was kept overnight at Carlisle Hospital after being struck in the back by Foose's car. She cut her head during the accident and had to have the 5-inch gash sewn up, says her husband, John R. Thomas Sr.
Their son, Danny, 13, though listed as having a minor injury, is fine, Thomas says.
Jenny L. Einsig, 17, of 1500 block of Lisburn Road, Wellsville, says she is "a little sore," but was treated at the scene.
Gloria Beecher, wife of Terry Beecher, 8000 block of Pineville Road, Shippensburg and Susan Armstrong, 36, of RD2, Newville, also was treated for minor injuries at the scene, says Miss Beecher.
Foose does not know what happened to the car, he said Sunday. "The car got out of control and started rolling, then flying through the air. It landed on the other side of the guard rail and there were some people close by that got hit by the car" and flying pieces. After the accident, he "could see people laying there on the ground and I seen the ambulance take them away."
Foose began racing around 5 p.m.; the accident occurred during his fourth race of the day. After being treated, Foose waited around to see what else he could do and then rode with his wife to Carlisle Hospital.
He "stayed until I knew they were in stable condition, then went home" about 3 a.m., he says.
Miss Beecher, who was in the pits "right where it happened" described the crash. "He took off and his car went squirrely. Then it turned and started to flip. We ran. It flipped again, then again and the cage part (where the driver sits) came over the guard rail and almost hit my mother. Parts were flying off like paper. 1 walked back and just seen them women. One lady was between the two cars, and one was under the tire of my dad's car."
Everyone involved in the accident was a friend or related to someone driving or working at the dragway, says Thomas, who is a mechanic for Beecher. They were all in the pits where cars are repaired. "The (Beecher) car was sitting in the pit area when (the other car) went over the top of the guardrail and went into the other car."
Hubert X. Gilroy is the attorney for about 20 people who have approached the township to limit expansion of the dragway.
"It's unfortunate that this accident took place," he says. "My clients wonder whether the dew that is customary in that area in late evening may have contributed by creating a slick track." They also feel this accident highlights the point that expansion should be restricted in some way by the township.
But Stambaugh refutes there is any connection between opponents concerns and the accident. "They're just trying to use that. It's not fair. There have been accidents before. This is the worst we've had and it's unfortunate. But to use it is very poor of them."
Wallace pointed out everyone en tering the facility is aware of the risks. There are two emergency medical technicians and an ambulance at every race. They responded quickly, he says. Jones sees no connection between residents' complaints about noise and lighting and the accident.
"The track had to be updated for safety to be sanctioned. But if the track is not up to safety standards then, sure, there could be problems, Jones says.
Mortimore says the supervisors will "have to look into it more close ly and tighten up" whatever regula tions need it. It can t go on like this We're already working on it."
Baker says there have been lots of complaints about the track but I never thought safety was one of them. The proper agencies should inspect the track, he says. He hopes the owners plan to stop racing until the accident is investigated.
The township recently told owners, opponents and township staff to get together to come to terms. Township Manager Mitch Hoffman is examining opponents' allegations of expansion to determine if it is violating any township ordinances and if a zoning hearing is required.
Ivo Otto III, attorney for the track, contends there is no expansion and no hearing is necessary.
