Census in 1870 in Southampton Township, Cumberland, PA. 22 The 1870 census recorded John Beecher, 9, living in the household of Joseph Bomberger Jr. (indexed in census as Bomleiger or Bomlerger as handwriting is not clear), 22, farmer, which included his mother, Sarah, 63; Fanny, 25; and Susan, 19. Also in the home is farm worker Charles Parker, 25, mulatto. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania except Charles in Virginia. Joseph Bomberger's farm is valued at $20,100. The post office was Shippensburg. [Note: Rev. Joseph Bomberger Sr. headed this household a year earlier, having died in Feb 1869. Why 9-year-old John Beecher lived here raises questions of whether Beecher's attended Bomberger's Mennonite church, or were somehow related. In 1870 John Beecher's father Philip lived some distance away east of Walnut Bottom.].

Census in 1880 in Penn Twp., Cumberland, PA. 23 The 1880 census recorded John Beecher, works on farm, 19, single, living in the household of Joseph Widders, farmer, 47, with Joseph's family: Elisabeth, 51; John N. M., 20; Anna L., 13; and Burdilla I., 5. Also in the home is housekeeper Emma J. Koontz, 14. Everyone and their parents were born in Pennsylvania except Joseph's mother in Maryland.

She had birthed 6 children, all alive in 1900: Mary M., 12, Feb 1888; Priscilla M., 10, May 1890; Ella M., 7, Dec 1892; Edna R., 4, Jul 1895; John R., 2, Feb 1898; and David H., 3 months, Feb 1900. Everyone and their parents were born in Pennsylvania.

John Beecher, widowed, 80, was living with his daughter, Ella Beecher, 46; son Paul, bulldozer operator, 30; daughter Winifred, 10; and son Glenn, 9. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. [Note: Winified and Glen are the children of Paul, and John is their grandfather. Their mother is living alone in Shippensburg in 1940.]

Samuel Beecher, 34, was living with wife Elizabeth D., 34; Leona, 13; Gerald, 12; Margaret, 9; Richard, 7; Mary, 4; Joan, 1. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. No one had an occupation listed.

16. Newspaper: Harrisburgh Telegraph: bequests in will of David E. Snoke, 3 May 1940, Harrisburg, Dauphin, PA. 32 A bequest of $50 is made to the Hays Grove United Brethren Church by the will of David E. Snoke, Penn township. Mrs. Emily Beecher was given $1000 outright and the use of a house in Centerville for life. A bequest of $100 was left Harry J. Beecher and the balance of the estate was bequeathed in equal shares to John S. Beecher, Edward F. Beecher, Mrs. Rebecca J. Pechart and heirs of Samuel J. Beecher.

18. Obituary: Shippensburg News-Chronicle: obituary of John S. Beecher on 9 Jul 1943 in Shippensburg, Cumberland, PA. 21 John S. Beecher, 82, died Sunday at his home on Newville R. R. 1. He was a member of the Hays Grove United Brethren Church.
He is survived by nine children, Mrs. Pearl Baughman, Mechanicsburg R. R. 2; Miss Ella Beecher, at home; Mrs. Vila Russell, Honeybrook; Mrs. Ruth Kough, Plainfield; John R. Beecher, Chicopee Falls, Mass.; Herman D. Beecher, Wormleysburg; Samuel A. Beecher, Newville R. R. 1; Pvt. Paul Beecher, Camp Wheeler, Ga., and Earl S. Beecher, Dickinson; 29 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Pechart, Newville R. R. 1.
Services were held at the home Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock with the Rev. Charles Miller, Oakville, officiating. Burial was made in the Newville cemetery.


John married Carrie Irene Gilbert, daughter of Henry David Gilbert and Martha Susan McLaughlin, on 8 Sep 1887 in Carlisle, Cumberland, PA.1 (Carrie Irene Gilbert was born on 18 Feb 1870 in Centerville, Cumberland, PA,3 8 20 33 died on 15 Aug 1937 in Hockersville, Cumberland, PA 8 30 33 34 35 and was buried on 18 Aug 1937 in Newville: Newville Cemetery, Cumberland, PA 8 30 33 35.)
