Herman Beard, 73, 32 Walnut street, Steelton, watchman at the quarry crossing of the Bethlehem Steel Company in lower Steelton, died this morning shortly after 7 o'clock in the Harrisburg Hospital of injuries sustained shortly before 7 o'clock when he was struck by a car driven by John J. Jennings, 37, 275 Calder street, Harrisburg, while at work on the crossing.
Jennings, a cililian, is an airplane engine inspector at the Middletown Air Depot.
Jennings was taken to the Steelton police station and questioned about the crash. He was released later pending action of Coroner Kreider.
Beard died as a result of a fractured skull, physicians at the Harriburg Hospital said.
In Rush To Throw Switch
Beard was struck by the Jennings car and thrown to the macadam street when he attempted to run across the street to throw a switch in order to route a draft of cars approaching from the coke plant.
He had been in the employe of the Bethlehem Steel Copmany for the last thirty years, serving in various capacities about the plant. For many years he was employed as locomotive engineers in the plant yards.
Mr. Beard, a native of Lancaster county, was also a veteran canalboat man, having worked for the Philadelphia and Reading Company when they operated boats on the old Pennsylvania canal.
Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Ellen Beard; two daughters, Mrs. Sadie Behman, Steelton, and Mrs. Florence Hinkle, Columbia; one son, Harvey Beard, at home, and a step-son, Albert Stains, Enola.
He was also a member of the Citizen's Relief, Steelton; Firemen's Relief, Steelton; Pennsylvania State Firemen's Association; Dauphin County Firemen's Association; Veteran Firemen; Knights of Malta, No. 113, Harrisburg and Warrior Eagle Tribe, No. 340, Red Men, Harrisburg.

Herman married Ellen Rebecca Fink, daughter of Frederick Fink and Catharine Plank. (Ellen Rebecca Fink was born on 9 Nov 1858 in South Annville Twp., Lebanon, PA,4 5 died on 20 Aug 1937 in Hamilton Township, Franklin, PA 5 6 and was buried on 23 Aug 1937 in Oberlin: Churchville Cemetery, Dauphin, PA 5 6.)
