Obituary: Evening Sun: obituary of Donald Beecher Hoffman on 14 Apr 2008 in Hanover, York, PA. 1 Donald Beecher Hoffman, 88, entered into God's eternal care Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center. Donald was the loving husband of Joyce (Sell) Hoffman with whom he recently celebrated 66 years of marriage on March 8, 2008. Born May 30, 1919, in Hanover, he was the son of the late George W. and Edna (Beecher) Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman graduated from Eichelberger High School in 1938 and served as a pattern maker in the United States Navy aboard the USS Dixie in the South Pacific during World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, WW II Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. After the War, in 1947 he founded Hoffman Pattern with his father George, building tooling for the foundry industry. He was CEO until his retirement. He was an avid inventor and designer with several patents, and was instrumental in establishing Hanover Lantern in 1970. Donald served on the Board of Directors of Farmers Bank, Clearview Terrace Senior Housing Apartments, South Western School Board and Hanover Lantern. He was past chairman of the Chesapeake Chapter of the American Foundry Society in Baltimore, Md., and the Conestoga Foundry Association in Lancaster. Mr. Hoffman was a member of the Hanover Elks Lodge 763, The Hanover AMVETS Post 22, The Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 14, Hanover, the Hanover VFW Post 2506, and the Hanover Republican Club. He was a life member of the Arcadian Social Club, the Hanover Country Club, where he was a past president, and Masonic Lodges: Patmos Blue Lodge, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, and York Forrest (32nd degree Mason). Donald was a faithful member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, and enjoyed hunting, RV traveling, sailing, golf, playing cards and spending time on his farm. In addition to his wife, Joyce, Donald is survived by three sons, William D. Hoffman and wife, Peggy, Michael D. Hoffman and Andrew D. Hoffman and wife, Bobbi, all of Hanover; four grandchildren, Andrea Murray and husband, Tom of Timonium, Md., Neal Hoffman and wife, Nikki of New Oxford, Mark Hoffman and wife, Rosemary of Austin, Texas, and Patrick Hoffman of New York, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren, Sydney Hoffman, Emma Hoffman, Abbey Hoffman, Harrison Hoffman, Tommy and Lauren Murray, Kayla Hoffman; and one sister, Esther Stetter of Hanover. A memorial service to remember and celebrate Donald's life will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut St., Hanover, with the Rev. Matthew Pensinger officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover. Memorial contributions in honor of Donald may be made to the Clearview Terrace Senior Housing Apartments, 800 Randolph St., Hanover, PA 17331; or the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, 195 Stock St., Suite 200, Hanover, PA 17331.
