He was the husband of Joan Gloria (Bell) Nickol. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on June 19. He was born September 5, 1925, in York, to the late Katie Irene (Beecher) Nickol and George William Nickol. He grew up in York and graduated from William Penn High School in 1943. After one semester at Penn State, Don enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was part of the 16th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, participating in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes & Central Europe campaigns. He received the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars and the French Jubilee of Liberty Medal. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. In retirement, he wrote a book using excerpts from his letters home. He graduated from Penn State in 1949 with a BS in agricultural biological chemistry. He began his career with Beacon Milling Company in Cayuga, N.Y. and transferred to York in 1953. In the 1960's, he started Eastern Laboratory Service Associates, an analytical laboratory testing food, feed, forage and water. He worked with Bob Hoffman and participated in product formulation and testing of his health products. Don also served as an inspector with the York City Health Department. Selling the laboratory in the late 1980's, Don and Joan retired to live along the Bogue Sound in North Carolina. In 2006, they moved back full time at Long Level and in 2014 moved to Gettysburg to live with a daughter. Don was a teacher and a leader. At the churches he attended he taught Sunday school and gave services at a Sunday youth service. He taught chemistry to RN students at York College. He had been a Boy Scout leader, a church deacon and a church elder. He was a past chair of the American Chemical Society. He was an honorary life member of the Susquehanna Yacht Club and a member of Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity and the University Club of York. Don liked nature, music and travel. He knew birds and their calls. He canoed, sailed, boated, windsurfed and scuba-dived. He played the organ and was always listening to music. He traveled with Joan, friends and family to many places near and far, like the Galapagos, Caribbean and South Sea islands. He especially liked Germany and Scotland. Don even joined Retired Executive Service Corps and stayed in Jordan. In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Steven Nickol of York; and two daughters, Sharon Swope and her husband, Donald Swope of Wrightsville and Sheryl Nickol and her husband, Arthur Marshall of Gettysburg; grandchildren; step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held at a later date, with burial at Mt. Rose Cemetery, York. Any remembrances can be made by contribution to Heartland Hospice, which provided exemplary care for Don in his final days or to an animal rescue organization of your choice.
