Five years later on June 7, Beecher made the 650-plus mile journey west to Chicago to celebrate the anniversary of remission with 104 other cancer survivors. "Five years is a significant milestone with this stuff," he said. "They've been doing that ever since they started it ... it's all just to make you feel good." Beecher says doctors diagnosed him with head and neck cancer in February 2008. He underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Chicago. "I underwent neck surgery at a local hospital," Beecher said in a news release. "The standard protocol was radiation and chemotherapy and the doctors strongly advised a feeding tube. I refused. At this time, my friend found Cancer Treatment Centers of America through the Internet. The rest is history." This is the 25th year that the center has invited five-year survivors to the annual "Celebrate Life" tree planting ceremony in Chicago. The tree, the center says, represents "survivorship." "Each and every day is a celebration of life and survivorship," said Scott Jones, president and CEO at center in Chicago. "At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, everything, from our patient-centered personalized treatment to our integrated therapies and supportive services, is orchestrated around the patient and their family. Patients and their families that are facing cancer choose us, and we stand side-by-side, hand-in-hand with them throughout their journey."
