2. Obituary: Tipton Daily Tribune: obituary of Sarelda Bowlin on 14 Feb 1923 in Tipton, Tipton, IN. 1 --- EARLY PIONEER GONE --- MRS. S. E. BOWLIN KNEW EARLY COUNTY LIFE. --- She Died Wednesday Morning Following Long Illness. --- Mrs. Sarelda Bowlin, one of Tipton county's earliest citizens, died at 10:30 Wednesday morning at her home on West Jefferson street, at the age of 82, following an illness of long duration, due to complications incident to her advanced years. Mrs. Bowlin came to this county when she was a mere child in 1847, and she had been a continuous resident of the county since then. She lived within a radius of one block of the square during the lifetime of three court houses -- the old log court house, the brick and the present structure. She was identified with much of the county's early history and until a short time before her death she was able to recall vividly those incidents of early days. Mrs. Bowlin, whose maiden name was Sarelda McElhaney, was born m Fayette county, Ohio, near Washington C. H., Feb. 19th, 1841, her parents being pioneers of Ohio. In 1847 the parents with the six children decided to leave the Ohio home and come to Indiana, a half brother of Mrs. Bowlin, Dr. Parker, father of Mrs. E. B. Martindale and Mrs. T. M Nance, having located In Tipton county near Normanda, about two years before. The trip was made in two wagons and they followed the National road, leaving it near Strawtown to follow the blazed trail to their destination. At Strawtown the condition of the roads was such that the horses gave out and it was necessary to wait until one of the boys could ride the lead horse to Normanda and secure some fresh teams. Later the family continued the trip, reaching the Parker home Oct. 10th, 1847, about dusk. When they reached the home they found Dr. Parker had been called to Tallholt to see a patient and did not reach home until the next day, haying made the long trip on horseback. The incidents of the long trip were generally referred to by members of the family as "some bad journey in." The road from Tetersburg to Normanda was the worst of any of the roads, the teams frequently stalling and it was a relief when tjie long trip was ended. Mrs. Bowlin remembered in detail that long journey and only a few days ago she told of her experiences. She remembered of an old inn or tavern which was near Tetersburg and they reached there late in the afternoon. Her father intended to stay at the inn all night as the trail was almost impassable but a man who lived in that community met them along the road and he said the inn had a bad reputation, that several people had been robbed there and he advised them to try to get to Normanda before night. August 13th, 1857, Mrs. Bowlin was united in marriage to Cliff Bowlin, and shortly after their marriage they moved to Tipton. Of this union there are four children living: the two daughters, Mrs. Mary Beher and Mrs. Effie Manford, of Noblesville, and two sons, John Bowlin, of this city and Dave Bowlin, who is in the milling business in Greenville, Mississippi. A daughter, Mrs. Nellie Haley and a son, Frank, died several years ago. She is also survived by three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Bowlin was a member of the Presbyterian church and in earlier days was faithful In her attendance. She was one of the good women of the community, of a happy, cheerful disposition, a good friend and neighbor, and made friends with all whom knew her.
