Walter J. Haynes, who until recently was secretary of the state railroad commission, died at 6 oclock last evening at the family home, 807 Sixth avenue, following an illness of nine weeks.
Mr. Haynes had lived in the capital city for many years. He was depot agent in Helena for the Northern Pacific railway company for a long period of time prior to his being employed by the rallroad commission. He went to work for the state commission in a minor capacity and by his natural ability and thorough knowledge of the railroad business was soon promoted to the highest appointive office in the gift of the commission, that of secretary. He resigned as secretary owing to his ill health and accepted less strenuous work in the rate department a few weeks ago.
Prior to coming to Helena, Mr. Haynes was for many years agent for the Northern Pacific railroad at Laurel, Montana. He enjoyed wide acquaintance in Montana and among tbe railroad workers and officials of the entire northwest.
Walter J. Haynes is survived by Mrs. Haynes and daughters Mrs. Oscar Hovde of Helena and Mrs. W. J. Carroll of Great Falls, and three sons, W. Rea of Great Falls, and Charles and Marlow of Helena. He was 54 years of age at the time of his death. Funeral arrangments are pending.


Walter married Lida B. Foster, daughter of Thomas Bower Foster and Mary Ellen Beeker, on 3 May 1890 in Grandview, Douglas, SD.1 (Lida B. Foster was born on 4 Dec 1869 in Otterbein, Benton, IN 1 9 and died on 7 Feb 1949 in Salem, Marion, OR 1 9.)
