Newspaper: Altoona Tribune: Fine Riding Marks Horse Show, 23 Feb 1939, Altoona, Blair, PA. 12 Fine riding coupled with the color and precision of the military attracted a large crowd to the first annual Military and Hunter Horse show last night at the Troop C cavalry post on Frankstown road. Entries from Johnstown, Clearfield, Tyrone, Philipsburg and Harrisburg attracted much interest. A trophy and four ribbons were awarded in each class. Particularly brilliant was the mounted exhibition drill by a platoon of Troop C cavalrymen with Sgt. S. T. A. Crawford in command. Lady riders in the hunter classes gave a fine performance and among the most promising riders in the show was 16-year-old Dick Shaffer, son of Dr. and Mrs. John Shaffer, of this city. Jean Bird Dovey of Johnstown and Frances Crous of Revloc also carried away attractive awards.

Seat and Hands -- Dixie Way, Dick Shaffer, first; Gaucho, Lt. McKinney, second; Green River, Charles R. Beeker, third and Craigston, Charles E. Maloy, fourth. Officers' charger -- Darkey Hanover, Capt. R. C. Lutz, first; Cannabis, Lt. J. B. Stauffer, second; Miss Springtime, Lt. L. A. Shull, third and Gaucho, Lt. Robert O'Brien, fourth.
