The funeral services of Thomas Norris, who died at the home of his son, Mr. C. H. Norris, No. 461 South Limestone street, yesterday at 2 p.m., will be held at the Lexington cemetery this afternoon at 4 o'clock.
Mr. Norris was in his 94th year and was perhaps the oldest citizen of Lexington, and the oldest Odd Fellow in the State. He had resided in this city for more than fifty years, and was a noble and upright man.
He was born at Jersey City, N. J., August 10, 1809. Early in life he removed to Philadelphia, where he followed the trade of a cabinet maker. While there he was married to a Miss Berry, the daughter of a steamship captain.
In 1836 he removed to Lexington and entered into the employ of James March, father of the present Main street furniture dealer of that name. He followed his trade, working in the establishment of Mr. March, located on Limestone.
Later he entered into partnership in the furniture business, the style of the company being Norris, Wiehl & Co., the Wiehl of the company being J. H. Wiehl, the well known undertaker of this city. While so engaged he met with reverses and was compelled to return to his bench for a livelihood.
Again he entered into partnership, the company's style being Byrd, Wiehl & Co., with which company he remained until 1860. In '61 he went into the confection business. Again in '65 he went into partnership with C. H. Norris at the corner of Mill and Short streets. He retired from active business eleven or twelve years ago, and has resided with his son, C. H. Norris.
His wife died 22 years ago. Of the union eight children, five boys and three girls were born, all but three of whom are dead. He is the father of C. H. Norris and M. F. Norris, of this city, and Mrs. Edrod, of Louisville, the latter being the oldest living child.
The funeral will be under the auspices of the Odd Fellows, of which order he was a devoted and enthusiastic member.
Thomas married Margaret "Maggie" Berry in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. (Margaret "Maggie" Berry was born in 1811 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA,3 died on 28 Jan 1881 in Lexington, Fayette, KY 3 4 and was buried on 30 Jan 1881 in Lexington: Lexington Cemetery, Fayette, KY 3 4.)
