1. Obituary: The Courier-Journal on 30 Jan 1881 in Lexington, Fayette, KY. 1 Death of Mrs. Margaret Norris News has been received here of the death at Lexington of Mrs. Margaret Norris, wife of Mr. Thomas Norris, the well-known bookseller and stationer, and one of the most prominent citizens of that place. Mrs. Norris died Friday afternoon at half-past three o'clock, after a long and painful illness of cancer, and mortality claimed in the closing of her life one of the best and kindest of women. She was very well known, not only in Lexington, where she and her husband had lived for thirty-five years, but in a large portion of the State. She was in her sixty-ninth year, and her life had been one of devotion to the deepest and best sentiments of charity and religion. Singularly forgetful of herself, she smoothed the sorrows of all about her, and her charitable deeds were as numerous as they were unselfish. Some years ago Mrs. Norris took a great interest in the cause of temperance and during the crusade took an active part, making several addresses in New Albany and Jeffersonville. She was a member of the Episcopal church and devoted to its teachings. There was a tenderness in her home life and in her sympathy with misfortune which won the warm love of all who knew her. Mrs. Norris was born in Philadelphia, whence she removed with her husband to Lexington thirty-five years ago. She leaves five children and a large number of grandchildren. One of them, Mrs. J. C. Elrod, mother of Eugene L. Elrod, Treasurer of Macauley's Theater, resides in this city. Another, J. W. Norris, is a well-known actor, having starred here years ago at Woods' Theater. He was afterward leading man at the Chestnut-street Theater, Philadelphia. The others reside in Lexington and were at her bedside in the last hours when the band of filial affection finds its tenderest duty in soothing away the pain of death. The funeral of Mrs. Norris will take place in Lexington this afternoon.
