1. He signed a will Will of Joseph Elliot on 4 May 1794 in Sadsbury Township, Lancaster, PA. 1 Whereas I Joseph Elliot of the Township of Sadsbury county of Lancaster and state of Pennsylvania being under Bodily weakness but through Divine favour am of a disposing mind & memory and for the settling my outward Estate do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner & form following Viz And first I order that all my st Debts & funeral expenses be paid and discharged by my Executors hereinafter named I Bequeath unto my Beloved Wife during her Widowhood, the Middle Story of the new stone house with a sufficient part of the Cellar to Occupy as she may have Occasion with free Liberty to pass & repass about her Lawfully concerns without Molestation or hindrance also as much firewood as she may have Occasion to use in good & suitable Condition brought Convenient to her Door Likewise a Sufficient Quantity of Garden ground where she may Choose I also bequeath unto her my best bed & furniture thereunto belonging Also one case of Dran's and Walnut table and all the Kitchen furniture And to be kept in one Good cond. six. sheep. And Moreover bequeath unto her the Sum of twelve pounds in gold or Silver to be paid unto her yearly every year all which Privileges she is to be Intitled to & enjoy whilst she remains a Widow. But in case she should Marry then she is to depart the Premises and all the privilege she is hereby Intitled to in or on the Premises aforesaid shall terminate & cease. And to be paid the sum of ten pounds in like money and in like manner as above during her life together with all such household furniture as above Specified to her own proper uses behoof forever. Which is to be held & Considered in Lieu of her Dowry. I Bequeath unto my Daughter Ruth the Wife of Robert Wason the sum of fifty pounds of like money aforesaid to be paid to her or her heirs in two years after my decease. I Bequeath unto my son John Elliot who hath been long absent the sum of five pounds if ever he returns. I Bequeath unto my three Daughters or to their lawful heirs that is to say) Elizabeth the wife of John Murry, Ann the Wife of Isaac Griffith and Ellinor the Wife of George Gibson all the Reversions and remainders of my Estate both real & personal whatsoever the same to be equally divided amongst them share & share alike by my Executors as soon as be Convenient according to their Discretion. Lastly I nominate Constitute, appoint my Esteemed friends Isaac Taylor of Salsbury & Asahel Walker of Sadsbury Township both of the County of Lancaster to be Executors of this my last Will and Testament. And Giving them my said Executors full power & authority to make sale of & Convey all my lands situate in the Township of Sadsbury aforesaid in as full & Ample manner according to law as I could were I personally present Together with all my Personal Estate in the best manner they are Capable to obtain the full Value & the money arising therefrom to remain in their In hands to discharge the Legacies before mentioned in the manner aforesaid. I Joseph Eliot of the Township of Sadsbury, County of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania. Do this twentieth Day of the twelfth month in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred ninety four make and publish this my Codicil to my last will and Testament in manner following that is to say I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Ruth the Wife of Robert Wason the sum of fifty pounds besides what I have bequeathed to her by my last Will the Interest only arising from the whole sum of one hundred pounds to her yearly to be paid to During her natural life to commence from the time first mentioned in my Will And then the said Principal sum after her decease to be equally divided amongst all her living children. And also if my Daughter Elinor the Wife of George Gibson should die without a Lawful heir of her own Body, then I order that what I have Bequeathed to her by my last will shall be kept Back or Returned in my Estate except the sum of One hundred pounds beside what household furniture I have given her. And I also order that my new house shall be Compleatly finished, the expence thereof taken out of my Estate. And what money my wife hath in her Possession shall be looked upon & deemed her own proper right.
