In many respects Robert J. Alderman was a reproduction of his father, showing the same business capacity and keen insight into men and affairs. On graduating from Furman University, his father called him to share in the responsibilities of a great and heavy business at Alcolu, S. C., where he had acquired a vast territory of heavily timbered land, enough to supply their great lumber mills for many years. They had their own railroads and equipment for moving the timber and lumber. The town of Alcolu, which David Wells established and named, was exclusively the property of the Alderman Lumber Company. They had their own handsome church building, hotel, school building, and other necessities for a well appointed community town. On the death of his father, Robert and his brother, Paul, assumed charge of the business and continued to operate it with the same vigor as before.
Robert married Mallie E., a native of Anderson County and a daughter of Solomon Geer, a well known scholar and manufacturer of Belton, S. C. Mallie was educated at the Greenville Woman's College. She possessed those rare gifts and graces that well fit one for presiding over such a happy family as theirs. They made their home in Alcolu where they were members of the Baptist Church, but he was buried at Belton, Mallie's native town.

Mattison Wells Alderman was born in Alcolu, S. C., and lived there until he had finished the 8th grade in school. He left the home village to complete the last two years of his secondary education at Stony Brook Preparatory School, Stony Brook, Long Island, N. Y. It was during those two years that he decided on a profession in chemistry. The next eight years of his life were devoted to preparation for this work. He completed a bachelor's degree in chemistry at Davidson College in North Carolina in June 1935. His education continued without interruption, culminating in receipt of a Ph.D. in chemistry from University of Virginia in June 1939. It was there that he made Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
Shortly after receipt of his doctor's degree, he went to work for General Foods Corporation in their then new Central Laboratories in Hoboken, N. J. After two years there he was transferred to the Post Cereals Division of General Foods in Battle Creek, Mich. He continued in his career as a chemist until the spring of 1953. Upon his request and with the consent of the management, he was transferred to the marketing side of the business.
During his two years in the metropolitan New York area, he met Betty, daughter of Frank Henry Bury of Allentown, Pa., in which city Betty was born and married. At the time they met, however, she was working in the Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital in New York, she being a registered nurse. She was living in an apartment building adjacent to that in which Mattison was living and they were introduced by mail through a mutual friend who was still attending the University of Virginia. That was in the fall of 1939 and they were married a year later.
