13. Census in 1940 in Harrisburg, Dauphin, PA. The 1940 census record has mistakes, reporting at 89 North 18th street in Harrisburg: Thomas E. Beecher, railroad engineer, 53, living with wife Constance S., 51. The census taker perhaps knocked on the door, no one answered, and a neighbor was asked to say who lived there? In the 1939 Harrisburg city directory at this address is listed Emma Beecher, with daughter Constance but without her husband. At 89 North 18th street in 1930 census was father Charles, mother Emma, and daughter Constance, and in 1950 census at this address Emma is living alone and her marital status "separated." In 1940 daughter Constance is reported living as a single lodger in Newville, PA where she was employed as a teacher. The 1940 census records Charles living alone in Middle Paxton Township, and his 1942 WWII draft record reports he lived at 523 N 15th in Harrisburg. So likely in 1940 Emma was living at 89 N 18th street alone, as the city directory records confirm, since she doesn't appear in 1940 census anywhere else. The 1950 census has Charles living alone. Therefore, the evidence suggests that Emma and Charles separated about 1938, although her obituary lists her as Emma Beecher and her death certificate has her married with spouse Charles.
