His real estate was worth $20,000 making him wealthy by comparison to others. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. 2. Census in 1860 in Butler Twp., Adams, PA. 18 David Beecher, 66, was living with wife Mary, 63. David's real estate was worth $5,000 and personal estate $4,500. Both were born in Pennsylvania. 3. Census in 1880 in Altoona, Blair, PA. 14 Samuel Bucher, age 60, laborer, is living with wife Sarah A. M., age 55, and daughter Annie, 16, employed as a dress maker. Living with them is Henry Shank, a nephew, age 24, cigar maker. Everyone and their parents were born in Pennsylvania. 4. Census in 1900 in Altoona, Blair, PA. 8 Samuel Beecher, boarder, 80, born Mar 1820, was living with wife Sarah, 75, born May 1825. They were married 57 years and she had birthed 10 children, 4 still alive in 1900. They were living in the home of son-in-law Edward Cavender, 40, Dec 1859, who was married for 21 years to Samuel's daughter, Sallie M., 40, May 1860 [should be 1859] who birthed 2 children, one living: their son George E., 13, Feb 1887. Also with them was Edward's mother Lydia, widowed, 78, Dec 1821, who had 12 children, 2 living. Lydia and her parents were born in Delaware. Everyone else was born in Pennsylvania, as were the parents of Samuel and Sarah. Edward owned the home at 407 Sixth Avenue. 5. Census in 1910 in Altoona, Blair, PA. 21 The 1910 census recorded at 407 6th Avenue: Edward Cavender, watchman for Pennsylvania Railroad, 50, living with wife Sally, 53; mother-in-law Matilda Beecher, widow, 84; and lodgers Harry Filer, locomotive fireman, 25, and George Guyer, craneman, 27. Everyone and their parents were born in Pennsylvania, except Edward's parents in Delaware and Harry's father in Germany. 6. Matilda Beecher, widow of the late Samuel Beecher, died at the home of her son-in-law, E. W. Cavender, 407 Sixth avenue, at 5:30 o'clock last evening, of exhaustion, after an illness covering a period of several weeks. Deceased was born at Carroll, Md., on May 10, 1825, being at the time of her death aged 85 years, 1 month and 10 days. She was married to Samuel Beecher, of Adams county, Pa., in June, 1843, and this union was blessed with ten children, of whom four survive -- George Calvin and David Henry Gilbert, of York; Clara J., wife of N. A. Gobrecht, of Altoona, and Sallie Ann, wife of E. W. Cavender, at whose home she passed her declining years. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. "Grandmother" Beecher, as she was familiarly known in the community in which she lived was for many years a follower of the Savior and was a charter member of the Second United Presbyterian church. She bore her recent sufferings with fortitude, never lost faith in whom she believed and prayed fervently that the Blessed Master would take her home, and her wish was granted, her demise being one of peaceful slumber. The funeral arrangements will be announced later and interment will be made in Fairview cemetery. 10. Obituary: Altoona Tribune: funeral of Mrs. Sarah A. Beecher will take place from her late home, 407 Sixth avenue, on Thursday morning at 9:15 o'clock and proceed to the Second United Brethren church, of which she was a member, where services will be conducted at 9:30 o'clock.
