1. Census in 1850 in Mount Pleasant Twp., Adams, PA. 3 The 1850 census recorded George Gulden Sr., farmer, 65, with wife Elizabeth, 60; Mary, 30; John, 18. Next door is George's son, George Gulden Jr., farmer, 30, living with wife Catharine, 21; and son Henry, 10 months when the census was recorded on 27 Aug 1850. George Sr's property is valued at $3000, and Jr. has no property value, suggesting he is living on his father's land. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania.

2. He signed a will on 20 Oct 1856 in Mount Pleasant Twp., Adams, PA. 4 5 In the name of God Amen

I George Gulden of the Township of Mount Pleasant County of Adams and State of Pennsylvania former, being in feeble health but of south mind memory and understating. And considering the uncertainty of this life, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit

First it is my will and I do order that all my just debts and funeral expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as convenient can be done after my decease.

Item It is my will that my son George shall have the farm whereon he now resides, Called the middle tract at Forty Dollars per acre to be paid in sums of one hundred dollars yearly to commence on the first day of April after my decease (Except one hundred dollars being the first payment, he the said George shall or may retain as Compensation for services rendered over age)

And to my son Emanuel to have the upper farm whereon he now resides at Thirty-eight Dollars per acre to be paid in the same manner of one hundred dollars yearly to commence on the first day of April after my death. And to my son John to have the old mansion farm adjoining the land of Wm. Showalter at Fifty Dollars per acre to be paid in sums of one hundred and fifty dollars yearly to Commence of the first day of April next after my decease as aforesaid.

Item I give and bequeath upon my four sons namely Daniel, George, Emanuel & John each the sum of one thousand dollars, the same to be considered as the land money on the said above mentioned farms.

And to my grand daughter Maryann Catharine Harman the sum of one thousand dollars to be paid to her when she shall arrive at the age of twenty years.

And to my grand son Adam Beacher (son of John Beacher) the sum of five hundred dollars to be paid to him when he arrives at the age of twenty one years (500.00) And to my daughter Mary intermarried with Joseph Harman the sum of one thousand dollars to her and her bodily heirs, And to my daughter Sarah intermarried with George Carl the sum of one thousand dollars to be paid or laid out in Real Estate at the discretion of my Executors for her use during her natural life and after her death to decent to her bodily heirs, And to my daughter Catharine intermarried with Adam Slank the sum of one thousand dollars, but if the said Catharine should die without any heirs then the same shall be refunded and be divided among my other heirs, The above sum to be paid out of any money that shall or may come into the hands of my Executors.

Further I do hereby empower and authorize my Executor to sign seal execute and acknowledge deeds of conveyance unto my three sons for the property above mentioned as soon as they or any one of them has paid the whole amount or balance of money as above specified. And if any money or sums of money shall remain in the hand of my Executor after paying the above amounts, Then and in such case the same shall be divided equally among my seven children namely Daniel George Mary Emanuel Sarah Catharine and John. And Lastly I nominate constitute and appoint my son Daniel to be my Executor of this my last will by me made and declared this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.

In Witness to the foregoing whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twentieth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty six.

Before me William Walter Register for the probate of wills and granting letters of Administration in wills for said County personally appeared Jacob Diehl & John May, the subscribing witnesses to the above will and being duly sworn according to Law did severally depose & say that they were present and saw & heard George Gulden the Testator sign his name thereunto, seal & publish pronounce and declare the foregoing instrument of writing as and for his Testament & Last Will and that at the time of so doing he thereof George Gulden the Testator at the time of signing was of prefect and sound and disposing mind, memory & understanding to the best of their Knowledge observation & belief, who at this request, and in his presence and in the presence of each other signed as witnesses thereunto.
