No. 185 -- Lieut. Col. Johann Adam Wintroth

The next solider in our Revolutionary series whose grave is to be found in Christ Reformed Chruchyard is a rather outstanding one -- Litutenant-Colonel Johann Adam Wintroth. The inscriptions from the stones marking the graves of this man and his wife are as follows:

Hier Ruhet
Johann Adam Wintroth

Anna Maria Windrothin
born in the year 1735
10th of Feb.
Died October 25, 1807.
Aged 72 years.

There is a tradition in the Wintroth family that Anna Maria, the wife of Johann Adam Wintroth, was an Indian woman and that her husband bought her from her father. If this is true, and we have no proof to the contrary, she quite evidently changed her original Indian name to the German "Anna Maria." She and her husband appear int the Christ Church records many times as sponsors at baptisms and on various other church occasions. Insofar as we know Johann Adam and Anna Maria Wintroth had no children of their own.

During the war of the Revolution Johann Adam Wintroth served, in 1782, as Lieutenant-Colonel of the Seventh Battalion of the York County Militia. The reference for this service can be found in the Pennsylvania Archives -- Sixth Series -- Volume 6 -- page 687.

It is thought that the Johann Jacob Winteroth, whose grave is also to be found in Christ Reformed Cemetery, was a brother of the Lieutenant-Colonel Johann Adam Wintroth. Johann Jacob Winteroth was also a soldier of the Revolution, serving as an Ensign.

The inscriptions from the stones marking the graves of this man and his wife are as follows:

Johann Jacob Winteroth
born April 20, 1735
Died Feb. 3, 1797

Maria Barbara Winteroth
born June 21, 1740
Died February 18, 1818
Alter 77 Jahr.

In addition to these two soliders and their wives the following other members of the Wintroth family are buried in this cemetery:

1. Mary M. Wintrode / Born August 20, 1768 / Died December 26, 1848 / Aged 80 years.
Note: the wife of Adam Winerode, who in his turn, was the son of Johann Jacob Winteroth, soldier of the Revolution, and his wife Maria Barbara Winteroth.
2. Abigail / wife of Samuel Winterode / Died July 5, 1829 / Aged 20 years 6 months.
Note: this young woman was the wife of Samuel Winterode, the son of John and Catherine Winrode. John Winrode was a son of Johann Jacob Winteroth, solider of the Revolution, and his wife Maria Barbara Winteroth.
3. Samuel Winrott / Died March 27, 1870 / Aged 63 years 9 months.
Note: Samuel Winrott was a son of John and Catherine Winrode. John Winrode, as you may remember, was a son of Johann Jacob Winteroth, solidier of the Revolution, and his wife Maria Barbara Winteroth.
4. Daniel Winrott / son of John Winrode / Died May 30, 1798 / Aged 5 years.
Note: this little boy was a grandson of Johann Winteroth, solider of the Revolution, an dhis wife Maria Barbara Winteroth, the son of their son, John Winrode.
5. Adam Winterode / died May the 26th, 1817 / Aged 53 years 6 months.
Note: the son of Johann Jacob Winteroth, solider of the Revolution, and his wife Maria Barbara Winteroth.
6. John Jacob Winrode / died June 28, 1833 / Aged 67 years 7 months.
Note: the son of Johann Jacob Winteroth, soldier of the Revolution, and his wife Maria Barbara Winteroth.
7. Elizabeth / wife of J. J. Winrode / Died April the 25th, 1844 / Aged 78 years 4 months.
Note: the wife of John Jacob Winrode mentioned above, and a daughter-in-law of Johann Jacob Winteroth, soldier of the Revolution, and his wife, Maria Barbara Winteroth.
8. John William Windterrode / of Jacob / died June 29th, 1830 / Aged 51 years.
Note: the son of Johann Jacob Winterode, solider of the Revolution, and his wife Maria Barbara Winteroth. This son, John William, had a wife Catherine, and she is probably buried beside him although her grave is unmarked.
We will continue our notes on this family next week.
Note: Please notice the different ways in which the name "Wintrode" is spelled. The various forms used in the column were taken from the tombstones.
