Newspaper: Philadelphia Inquirer: Darryl Beacher Threatened by Gunman, 9 Apr 1997, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. ¹² Mark Steven Yorden burst out of his townhouse Monday evening, police and neighbors said, yelling that he would kill his neighbors and the President. Wearing a yellow "Don't Tread on Me" flag around his head and a red designer tie, he walked into a parking lot at the Liongate development in this Chester County town and pulled a 9mm handgun out of his khaki pants. "I have enough ammo to take care of police and all of you," he shouted, according to neighbors and police. "You voted for him; you let it happen. . . . Nobody can stop me now." He fired into the air four times. Then he got into his 1990 white Chevrolet Cavalier and drove away. Investigators said that outburst, around 5:30 p.m., was the beginning of a shooting spree that continued with Yorden, 38, riddling a telephone-company van with bullets and ended one hour later just outside the state police barracks at Avondale. There he emerged from the woods wearing only his socks and surrendered after having fired numerous rounds at troopers and their patrol cars, police said. No one was injured. According to police, Yorden said he had fired at the troopers because they were soldiers for President Clinton, who he said "gassed babies at Waco." He had told neighbors he was on his way to Washington to kill the President, according to police. Yorden was being held in Chester County Prison after failing to post $250,000 cash bail. He was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, public drunkenness, and related offenses. At a news conference yesterday morning at the Avondale barracks, state police and Chester County District Attorney Anthony Sarcione described Yorden's tear through the county. Leaving Liongate, where he had been arrested recently and accused of smashing outdoor lights, he drove south on Route 113 toward Downingtown. Uwchlan police alerted the state police at Embreeville, who had already received several calls from residents complaining about Yorden's erratic driving, police said. About 5:50 p.m., Yorden stopped in West Bradford Township, where Bell Atlantic repairman Daryl Beacher was working. Beacher, 41, of Coatesville, said he was talking on the telephone when he heard a car behind him and somebody yelling at him to get off the phone. When he turned, he saw a man with a rifle. "He was just ranting on about Clinton," Beacher said. "He approached me . . . and started pulling the telephone wires out of the box. I just backed away, and I kept saying, 'What are you doing? What are you doing?' " Beacher was outside his Bell Atlantic van, on the driver's side. "He pointed the rifle at me, and I just remember saying, 'Don't shoot me.' He pointed the rifle at the truck. The first shot was a misfire. Then he unloaded six rounds at the truck," Beacher said. Yorden got back in his car and drove away, said Beacher, who was not injured. In all, Yorden shot the repair van at least 15 times with an SKS 7.62mm assault rifle equipped with a fixed bayonet, according to police.
