Mentzer, who was known as "Marty," retired in 1983 after 43 years at Hershey Foods, where he worked as a planner and an estimator. Previously, he worked 25 years in maintenance and repair for Hershey Creamery.

Early in his life, he wove silk cloth for parachutes at mill in Lebanon, Lancaster and Myerstown.

He was 1935 graduate of Myerstown High School, where he participated in athletics. After graduation, he took advanced courses in math and chemistry at Lebanon High School.

Martin married Aerietta Grace Crouse on 16 Jul 1935. (Aerietta Grace Crouse was born on 29 Oct 1916 in Myerstown, Lebanon, PA,⁴ died on 19 Feb 2007 in Myerstown, Lebanon, PA ⁴ and was buried in Myerstown: Mount Hope Cemetery, Lebanon, PA ⁴.)
