MOUNT CARMEL \emdash Kathy Beacher wasted no time during a five-minute shopping spree at Boyer's Food Markets Wednesday evening.
The Shenandoah Heights woman purchased the winning ticket for the intense shopping experience benefiting the Mount Carmel Area Community Center.
"It's going to be exhilarating. Here we go!" Beacher said moments before filling her shopping cart with $849 of mainly seafood and meat.
The second annual fundraiser was a success for the community organization, which is renovating the former American Legion mansion at Avenue and Maple Street.
"I think it's going for a great cause. I'll make any donation I can make," Beacher, whose family has connections to Mount Carmel, said.
The second- and third-place winners received a $100 and $50 gift certificate, respectively.
The organization sold approximately 400 tickets since July, profits of which will be used for daily expenses, such as trash and snow removal, and property insurance, according to President Cathy Besser.
Board members are looking forward to 2024, when the banquet hall renovation is slated to take place.
In 2022, the organization received a $500,000 grant for the project from the Charles B. Degenstein Foundation. Besser said the organization paid some architect fees, leaving approximately $400,000 for construction.
Besser said HPCI Construction or its subcontractors will install new windows and doors, upgrade the electrical system and plumbing, and construct an ADA-compliant ramp fronting Maple Street.
The organization received a $250,000 grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development to repair the leaking roof that caused most of the damage to the banquet hall.
Besser said the organization will stretch the funds as far as possible and, in the meantime, apply for additional grants.
Fundraisers, she said, will be held throughout the year. The organization also will participate in the annual Raise the Region, a 30-hour online fundraising event conducted by First Community Foundation Partnership.
