4. Newspaper: The Sentinel: Mark Peiper, Martin Cohick, Richard Beecher: Three honored for bravery, 8 Dec 1982, Carlisle, Cumberland, PA. 9 (photos of Mark Peiper, Martin Cohick, Richard Beecher)
Three people, including two Big Spring High School students, were honored today for pulling two other students from a burning car in August in Penn Township. Seniors Mark A. Peiper, RD4 Carlisle, and Martin A. Cohick, RD5 Carlisle, and another man, Richard W. Beecher, RD1 Newville, received the Pennsylvania State Police Meritorious Citizenship Award. The ceremony took place this morning during a special assembly program at the school. The three are credited with saving the lives of two Big Spring High School students Donald L. Hall, 75 W. Main St., Newville, and Edward Moore, RD3 Newville. All four students were football players at the school. Hall and Moore were in a car that crashed into a tree at 11:25 p.m. Aug. 28 at the intersection of routes 465 and 174 in Mooredale, State Police at Carlisle said. They were pulled from the burning vehicle by the three rescuers seconds before it was engulfed in flames, police reported. Dunn wrote in separate letters to Peiper, Cohick and Beecher: Your prompt and proper action was directly responsible for the saving of two lives." Hall was driving, with Moore in his car, west on Route 465 and failed to make a curve at the intersection with Route 174, police said. The car ran off the road and struck a large tree. The engine burst into flames. Cohick and Peiper, in a car behind Hall, stopped and ran to a nearby house to call an ambulance, police reported. Beecher came on the scene in his car and helped the two set out flares. The three then went to the aid of the two injured youths in the burning car. The doors were jammed and "extremely difficult" to open, police said. After several tries, with the engine compartment still burning, Cohick, Peiper and Beecher managed to force open the driver's door and pulled the two injured students from the vehicle. Seconds later, the car was engulfed in flames and destroyed, police said. Hall was taken in serious condition to Hershey Medical Center and Moore was treated at Carlisle Hospital, police said. Hall later recovered.
