Most people travel to Europe for a vacation, but two Hampden Twp. youngsters are going there to make their mark in the soccer world. At age 14, Jeremy Beacher is packing his bags for a month long soccer playing tour in Holland, Denmark, Sweden, and, possibly the Soviet Union, with a national group called TEAMS/USA. Earlier this year at Good Hope Middle School eighth-grader was accepted into the national group of youngsters under the age of 15 who compete against international teams.
Joseph Wachs III, 15, who just completed ninth-grade in the Cumberland Valley School District, also will be joining a TEAMS/USA soccer team for students under 17 years old. Wachs said he was extremely surprised when he received his letter stating he had been accepted for the team. "There are a lot of good soccer players in the Philadelphia area, and I wasn't really expecting to be accepted,' he said.
Beacher who plays for the Hampden Hawks, a township soccer team, and Wachs, who plays on the school team, will be playing in Europe throughout much of July. They are the only youngsters who have been selected from central Pennsylvania.
If they are chosen for select teams from the group that travels abroad, they might also play in the Soviet Union. Beacher, the son of George and Lorna Beacher, said he has been playing soccer since he was 8 years old, when his mother forbid him to join a football team. Soccer came to him easily and he soon decided the European game of football was more his style than the American version.
"I think soccer takes a lot more endurance than football does," he said. "There is a lot more involved with the game." Wachs, the son of Joseph Jr. and Bonnie Wachs, said he first started kicking around a soccer ball when he was 6 and has been playing ever since. Soccer is a popular European sport that many youngsters play from very young ages. But the two Americans aren't intimidated by the tour. "I just want to do my best and I'll see what happens," Beacher said. He is trying to get in shape for the rigorous program that will mean playing soccer almost every day during the month. He has been jogging and lifting weights to get ready for the routine. Wachs said he is just concentrating on making it through the first week of training when they get to Europe.

5. Newspaper: Patriot-News: Beacher helps Capital meet goal, 9 Aug 1993, Harrisburg, Dauphin, PA. 8 Jeremy Beacher is a pretty good midfielder, good enough to be a three-time Mid-Penn Division III All-Star during his Trinity High career.
He expected to play a vital role for the Capital scholastic soccer team in the Keystone State Games yesterday, though not this vital, and certainly not in this position.
But Beacher had no choice in the matter. Beacher, the midfielder, played goalkeeper, and helped guide Capital to a 2-1 victory over Delaware Valley in the gold medal game at Hampden Twp. Park.
He was forced into action because Capital's regular goalkeeper, Stuart Reynolds, suffered a concussion during a 2-0 win over Blue Mountain earlier in the day and the roster contained no reserve keeper. That left head coach Ernie Kerstetter with a sticky decision.
"The only keeper I took was Stu and that's because he has never been hurt to the point where he's missed a game," Kerstetter said. "I didn't know he had a mild concussion until an hour before the game."
Kerstetter chose Beacher as Reynolds' replacement, knowing Beacher played keeper once this year in a tournament. But that was the massive extent of his experience. Kerstetter looked into Beacher's eyes shortly before the game and detected some uncertainty.
"I was scared, very scared," Beacher admitted. "But goal is mostly instinct."
"I told him, I don't care if we get beat 6-0, do not take all of this on as your own responsibility," Kerstetter said. "It's not even your position. See if you can rise to the occasion."
After Del Valley's Alan Nicholl scored for a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of play, Beacher felt the pressure mounting.
"That made me more nervous, but about two minutes after they scored I saved a breakaway and that relaxed me."
It wasn't long before Cumberland Valley's Chip Fohl knotted the score for Capital and then the defense took over. Capital's defense had been brilliant throughout the tournament, allowing just one goal, and stepped up again to help Beacher stave off intense Delaware Valley pressure.
"You saw intensity out there. They picked it up about seven levels," Kerstetter said.
