1. Alt. Name:,. It is highly likely that the correct original surname is Haupt (often anglicized to Houpt). Selinsgrove (where Mary Ann was born) and Schuylkill County (where they lived) were heavily populated by Pennsylvania German immigrants and their descendants. The surname Haupt (meaning "head" in German) is a well-established Pennsylvania Dutch name. When spoken with a thick German dialect, "Haupt" or "Houpt" sounds very similar to "Howpt" or "Hopt." Hough: In English, "Hough" is often pronounced "How" or "Huff." If an English-speaking clerk or census taker heard "Howpt" but missed the soft "pt" at the end, they could easily write down "Hough" or "How." The discrepancies on the 1908 death certificates (Hough, Hood, Huth) were provided by Mary Ann's children and grandchildren (like Jacob J. Jacobs and others). Because Mary Ann's husband was of Welsh/French/English extraction (his mother was Welsh), her children were likely English speakers. By the time they were providing information in the early 1900s, they were trying to phonetically spell a grandfather's German name they had rarely seen written down, resulting in a fractured variety of spellings.
