She was riding the bike along the sidewalk and saw the truck bearing down on her out of control. She jumped from the bike and scampered over the wall to safety a fraction of a second before the truck hit the wall. The wheels crushed her abandoned bike. Two other vehicles, a city bus and another truck, were involved in the accident in the 1500 block of Wake Forest Road. Two of the bus passengers were hospitalized with injuries received in the wreck.

A 10-year-old girl riding a small bicycle narrowly escaped death or serious injury yesterday in a three-vehicle collision in which two city bus passengers were hurt. Sylvia Beeker of 1429 Wake Forest Road thought quickly when she saw a towering transfer truck heading toward her as she was riding her bike on the sidewalk in the 1500 block of Wake Forest Road. She jumped from the bike and scampered up a five-foot stone wall into her yard. The truck demolished the wall where the child had been a fraction of a second earlier. Her abandoned bike was crushed beneath the truck wheels. Hurt in the accident involving two trucks and a White Tran portation bus were L. R. Bridges, 51, of Wake Forest Route 1, and Mrs. Pauline Jeannette Cash, 44, of 323 E Martin Street. Bridges, who was descending from the bus door, received a fractured hip, police said. Mrs. Cash, sitting in a right front seat on the bus, suffered chest injuries officers reported. Investigating officer G. E. Grimes said that both victims were admitted to Rex Hospital and that their condition was described as "good" last night. Grimes said the wreck occurred when the bus driven by James Floyd McConnell, 47, of Cary Route 1, stopped to discharge passengers at Wake Forest and Courtland Drive. As Bridges was alighting from the bus, a truck driven by Harold Wayne Peele, 22, of 564 New Bern Avenue collided with the rear of the bus. Peele told Officer Grimes that his brakes failed. The third truck, a tractor-trailer type vehicle driven by Charles Eugene Blanton Jr., was following Peele's truck and had to swerve over the sidewalk and into the wall to keep from colliding with the two wrecked vehicles. Sergeant Williard Bunn of the police traffic division said it was a miracle the Beeker child wasn't crushed to death under the wheels of the truck. Only her quick action saved her. Officer Grimes charged Blanton with operating with improper brakes. McConnell was charged with following the bus too close and improper brakes.
