Deceased a Well Known Character in Lebanon.

A VETERAN OF THE WAR.

Charter Member of the Perseverance Fire Company and an Innkeeper of This City - Had Recently Celebrated His 71st Birthday.

Adam Stains, the well-known proprietor of the Lafayette hotel, corner Sixth and Chestnut streets, succumbed to an attack of Illness extending over about six weeks, last evening shortly before 6 o'clock. He was aged 71 years.

The deceased suffered from an attack of liver complaint, during which time he was confined to his home. His condition several weeks ago was such that his life was several times despaired of, yet he rallied and his friends hoped after all to see him recover completely. But changes came for the worse and he breathed his last yesterday evening.

He was widely known and had many friends. He was a member of the First U. E. Church, as well as of Sedgwick Post 42, G. A. R., of this city. During the Civil War, the deceased served his country and was a member of Company I, 73d Pa. Regt.

In early life Adam Stains was an active Republican. He was a charter member of the Perseverance Fire Co. By trade he was a wheelwright and patternmaker and followed that business for many years prior to entering the hotel business.

Deceased is survived by his wife and these children: Mrs. Milton Hershberger, Mrs. Joseph Nagle, Miss Florence Stains, Miss Sadie Stains, Thomas Stains, Charles Stains, Millard Stains, Albert Stains, Fred. Stains. Paul Stains, Lebanon; Mrs. Peter McMichael, Emporium, Pa.

The flag on the Perse Fire Company's house is at half-mast today because of Mr. Stain's death.

Mr. Stains had in recent years formally celebrated each of his recurring birthdays and his last, falling on the first of January, was an elaborate affair.


Adam married Sarah Ann Biecher, daughter of Benjamin Biecher and Elenora Weidner, on 20 Jul 1851 in , Lebanon, PA.1 (Sarah Ann Biecher was born on 1 Sep 1831 in , Lebanon, PA,12 13 died on 8 Sep 1872 in Lebanon, Lebanon, PA 13 and was buried in Lebanon: Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon, PA 13.)


Adam next married Ellen Rebecca Fink, daughter of Frederick Fink and Catharine Plank. (Ellen Rebecca Fink was born on 9 Nov 1858 in South Annville Twp., Lebanon, PA,14 15 died on 20 Aug 1937 in Hamilton Township, Franklin, PA 15 16 and was buried on 23 Aug 1937 in Oberlin: Churchville Cemetery, Dauphin, PA 15 16.)
