2. Newspaper: South Bend Tribune: Keith Beher, Tribune Carrier, Seriously Injured in Accident, 13 Nov 1927, South Bend, St. Joseph, IN. 12
Tragedy stalked across the path of Keith Beher, orphan youth and Tribune newsboy, when he left the home of his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Stauffer, with whom he resides at 1024 Sherman avenue, early Saturday afternoon on his happy carefree way to The Tribune office, for he had barely left the Stauffer residence when his bicycle was run down by a passing automobile and Keith was thrown to the pavement, sustaining three skull fractures from which it is feared he will not recover. Keith attends the Muessel school, where he is either in the sixth or seventh grade. In addition to his duties as a Tribune carrier, he has also found time to be a Boy Scout, being a member of troop 14. At the time of the accident he was intending to pay his weekly account after which he was to deliver his Saturday afternoon papers. This morning the injured youth lies in a coma in Epworth hospital. On Friday he was one of the happiest boys in the city for on that day he celebrated his 14th birthday and received the congratulations of his friends, not to mention numerous gifts highly cherished. To-day his fellow newsboys are hoping for his recovery for Keith is one of the most popular of the small army of youths who dally deliver The Tribune to thousands of South Bend homes. The driver of the automobile with which Keith collided is David Mulcahy, age 27, of 714 Lindsey street, who was proceeding north, on Sherman avenue. As he passed the Stauffer residence the boy on the bicycle suddenly rode out from a driveway directly into the path of the car. So terrific was the crash that windshield of Mr Mulcahy's machine was smashed but Mr. Mulcahy was uninjured. When the boy was picked up there were several deep gashes in his head. He! was taken to the hospital where surgeons performed an emergency operation in the hope that his life may be saved. Keith has been a Tribune carrier about three months during which time he has made many friends for himself among the customers along his route. It was his custom to be punctual in delivering his papers and every afternoon exactly at the required hour he could be found at Portage and California avenues, one of the outlying points where bundles of papers are distributed to carriers.
