ENCINITAS-- Richard B. (Rich) Bicher, 61, died at home on June 14, 2011 after a valiant and courageous 3.5 year battle with esophageal cancer. Rich grew up in Hackensack, NJ, spending his summers in Normandy Beach, NJ, as one of the earliest East Coast surfers. He and his future wife, Deb, moved to North County in 1967. In 1972-73, Rich began working with a group of friends on the renovation of the 1927-era La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, which had been closed for many years. When Rich became manager of La Paloma in 1973-74, he began showing an eclectic mixture of surf films, art and avante garde films. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Deb; his sons, Perry and Evan; his dog, Bleu; brother and sister-in-law, Len and Elaine Bicher of Bayville, NJ; sister and brother- in-law, Barbara and Barry Williams and their daughter, Ellie of Point Pleasant, NJ; sisters-in-law, Catherine Johnson and Kim DeAndrade; brother-in-law, Bruce Johnson; and niece, Solana. His father, mother and older brother preceded him in death. Donations may be made to California German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue at PO Box 974, Bonsall, Calif. 92003, or the Elizabeth Hospice, 150 West Crest Street, Escondido, Calif. 92025. A memorial service is planned for late July. When date and time are formalized, information will be posted on Rich's Facebook Page.
