Census in 1870 in Lovejoy Township, Iroquois, IL. 6 The 1870 census recorded Joseph Pruett, farmer, 27, living with wife Augusta, 27; Charles, 3; Dolly, 2; and William, 1. [NOTE: William as recorded by census taker should have been Hiram.] Joseph was born in Indiana, Augusta in Michigan, and their children in Illinois. Joseph's farm was valued at $2050 and personal estate $650. The post office was Milford. 2. Census in 1880 in Lovejoy Township, Iroquois, IL. 7 The 1880 census recorded Joseph Pruitt, farmer, 36, living with wife Augusta, 36; son Chas., farming, 13; daughter Dolly, 12; son Hirum, 10; son Frank, 9; daughters Kitty, 6, and Nelly, 1. Joseph was born in Indiana, his father in Kentucky and mother in North Carolina. Augusta was born in Michigan and her parents in New York. Their children were born in Illinois. 3. Residence: in 1893 in Wellington, Iroquois, IL. 8 4. Census in 1900 in Wellington, Iroquois, IL. 9 The 1900 census recorded renting a home: Hiram Pruitt, farmer, single, 29, living with housekeeper Lillie Widner, 22; laborer Frank Widner, 25; and servant Daisy Widner, 20. Hiram was born in Illinois and the Widner's in Indiana. Hiram's father was born in Indiana and mother in Michigan. Next door is Hiram's father who owned a farm, Joseph, farmer, 57, born Mar 1843, and mother Augustes [sic], 57, born Jul 1843, with three of their children. 5. Census in 1910 in Milford, Iroquois, IL. 10 The 1910 census recorded Hiram B. Pruett, 40, living with hired man Frank Frame, 39; and Frank's wife, housekeeper Sadie Frame, 36. Hiram was born in Illinois, his father in Indiana and mother in Michigan. Everyone else and their parents were born in Indiana except Sadie was born in Illinois. Frank and Sadie were married for less than a year, and this was her second marriage, and she had birthed a child who was alive but not living with her in 1910. 6. Census in 1920 in Hoopeston, Vermilion, IL. 11 The 1920 census recorded owning a home on E. Penn Street: Hiram Pruitt, age unknown, no occupation, living with wife Carrie B., 45, and mother-in-law Margaret A. Harlan, widowed, 85. Hiram and Carrie were born in Illinois. Hiram's parents father was born in Indiana and mother in Michigan. Carrie's mother was born in Ohio and father in Kentucky. Margaret was born in Ohio, her father in Connecticut and mother in Virginia. 7. Census in 1930 in Hoopeston, Vermilion, IL. 12 The 1930 census recorded living in an $8000 home at 615 E. Penn Street: Hiram D. Pruitt, general farm manager, married, 59. Hiram and his father were born in Illinois and his mother in Michigan. Also in the home is a roomer, John M. Kondle, widowed, 65, an accountant in an iron works, who was born in Maryland as were his parents. 8. Census in 1940 in Hoopeston, Vermilion, IL. 13 The 1940 census recorded owning a $2600 home at 615 East Penn Street: Hiram D. Pruitt, retired, 70, living with wife Cassie H., 66. They were born in Illinois and lived in the same house in 1935. He had attended 4 years of high school and she 2 years of college. 9. Arrival: Oct 1955, in Lake Worth, Palm Beach, FL. 14 10. Residence: 222 North J Street, Lake Worth, FL on 2 Mar 1956 in Lake Worth, Palm Beach, FL. 14 11. Newspaper: Miami Herald: Man Asphyxiated at Lake Worth, 4 Mar 1956, Miami, Miami-Dade, FL. 4 LAKE WORTH -- (AP) --Hiram D. Pruitt, 86, was killed Saturday by gas fumes but his wife, unconscious when discovered, apparententiy was recovering. The couple spent several hours their apartment while an unlighted jet in the stove oven filled the rooms with gas. A neighbor who called police after she failed to see the Pruitts during the morning said the oven apparently was left burning Friday night and that the flame went out later allowing unburned gas to escape. 12. Newspaper: Palm Beach Post: 24-Hour Area Toll Totals Four Dead, 13 in Hospital, 4 Mar 1956, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, FL. 15 Lake Worth Police reported the death of Hiram D. Pruitt, 86, of 222 N. J. St., from asphyxiation caused by gas fumes escaping from a gas stove oven jet, which had been left burning, but which had gone out. Pruitt's wife was in Good Samaritan Hospital, but was expected to recover. A neighbor, Mrs. Lulu Frances, reported to police when she failed to see the couple Saturday morning. It is believed that the Pruitt's had dined Friday night and gone to bed without turning off the oven. 13. Obituary: Palm Beach Post: obituary of Hiram D. Pruitt on 4 Mar 1956 in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, FL. 16 HIRAM D. PRUITT. Mr. Pruitt. 86, died at his residence, 222 N. J St., Lake Worth, sometime Thursday night and Saturday noon from asphyxiation. He came to Lake Worth from Hoopestown, Ill., in October, 1955. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Carrie Pruitt. Lake Worth; a sister, Mrs. John Lockhart, Danville, Ill.; a niece, Mrs. Margaret Beatty. Kentland, Ind., and a nephew, Frank Eyman, Miami. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Tom Smith Funeral Home. Hiram married Carrie Belle Harlan on 24 Aug 1916 in Watervliet, Berrien, MI.1 (Carrie Belle Harlan was born on 18 Nov 1874 in Washington, Tazewell, IL,17 died on 9 Mar 1956 in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, FL 14 17 and was buried in Lovejoy Township: Floral Hill Cemetery, Iroquois, IL 17.) |
