Otterbein Woman Dies in Hospital

Mrs. Pearl B. Johnson, 78, widow of Edward M. Johnson of Otterbein, died at 9:30 p. m. Thursday in St. Elizabeth hospital where she had been a patient since last Sept. 23. She had lived with a brother, Dr. Ernest S. Baker, 536 South Ninth street, for two and a half years, but frequently returned to her home which she maintained at Otterbein. Born at North Manchester, she was a daughter of Sumner W. and Alice (Beeker) Baker, Benton county pioneers. The family moved to Otterbein in 1880. She was graduated from Purdue university, receiving a bachelor of science degree in 1894 and a master's degree in 1896. She also was graduated from the Chicago Music college in 1901 and taught school and music in Bolivar township schools in Benton county until her marriage to Edward Morton Johnson on Jan. 21, 1903. Her husband died in 1944. Mrs. Johnson was an active member of the Otterbein Methodist church and formerly was a district leader of the church women's organizations. She was the last Lafayette district president of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society before its organization into the Woman's Society of Christian Service. She also was Spiritual Life secretary of the Lafayette district WSCS for four years and sponsor of the Hawthorne Missionary society, of the Otterbein church for many years. She was a life member of the Purdue Alumni association and a charter member of the Otterbein Woman's Literary club. Surviving besides her brother, Dr. Baker, is a son, Paul B. Johnson of Greenwood, and another brother, Linnaeus E. Baker, Long Beach, Calif.
