Prominent Lawyer Succumbs to Long Illness
Was County Attorney Seven Years
George Daniel Parks, for several years one of the most prominent attorneys of Lafayette, died Monday morning at 9:05 o'clock at the Home hospital, succumbing to pernicious anemia. Mr. Parks had been in ill health for about two years, dating from the death of his beloved wife, which occurred November 27, 1920, and from which shock he never recovered. George D. Parks was born in Richmond, Maine, on the 29th of September, 1856. His father was a Maine farmer and school teacher. As a boy he worked on his father's farm attending the public schools of Richmond, part of the time a pupil of his father. At the age of 15 he entered the University of Maine at Orono, being graduated there in the school of civil engineering in 1876. After graduation he opened an office of civil engineering in Brunswick, Maine. While engaged in his profession he studied law at odd times and was admitted to the bar in 1880 at Brunswick, He began practicing law there.
HIS FAMILY.
On June 8, 1881, he was married to Anna S. White, now deceased, of Bowdoinham, Maine. There was born to them two children, Roscoe White Parks, in 1881 and Morris Randlette Parks in 1885. In 1890 the family moved to Ft. Payne, Alabama, and in 1893 came to Lafayette. The two sons survive him.
Roscoe W. Parks is a graduate of Purdue university, in the class of 1902, and is now head of manufactures of Grasselli Chemical company. He married Elizabeth Hamilton, of Bayonne, New Jersey, and they have one daughter, Ruth Hamilton Parks, nine years of age. They live in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Morris R. Parks is a graduate of Purdue university, in the class of 1907, and a graduate of Indiana Law School, class of 1909. He is now prosecuting attorney in Tippecanoe county, and was engaged in the general practice of law with his father, under the firm name of Parks and Parks. He married Ruby M. Beeker, a graduate of Indiana university in the class of 1913. They have two children. John Moris, aged four, and Robert White, aged one.
Mr. Parks is survived by two half-sisters, Mrs. Charles E. Vanderkleed, of Collingswood, New Jersey, and Mrs. Frank L. Jaques, of Bath, Maine.
CHURCH WORKER. He became a member of the First Baptist church of Lafayette in 1895, and served for many years as a trustee of that church. He was active In many branches of church work.
WAS CIVIL ENGINEER. Mr. Parks was of old New England stock. His grandfather came from Manchester, England, with his family in 1774, and founded the present town of Richmond, Maine. On his mother's side he was a direct descendent of Lewis Morris, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was one of the oldest practicing lawyers of the city; he was engaged in the active practice of law forty-two years. With his experience and ability as a lawyer and an engineer he was a very valuable member of the Tippecanoe County Bar. He served as County Attorney for seven years. During the World War he was County Appeal Agent and gave most of his time to that office, serving without pay. When he came to Lafayette he took over the office of Chase and Chase in the old First National Bank building and practiced alone there until 1909, when he took his son, Morris, into partnership with him under the firm of Parks and Parks.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows' lodge and the Lincoln club. He was an ardent republican, and in the councils and campaigns of his party he took an active and prominent part. He always took an uncompromising and courageous stand for morality and civic righteousness. He was a devoted husband, an ideal father and brother and a loyal friend to a host who will mourn his death.
The funeral will be conducted from the family residence. 803 North Ninth street, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. E. M. Martinson of the First Baptist church, officiating. Interment will be in Springvale cemetery.
