Railroad Car Inspector Kills Wife and Himself at Drive-In Stand Here

F. J. Beher, about 35, a railroad car inspector, at noon Monday fatally wounded his wife, Mrs. Atha Lea Beher, while she stood near a drive-in stand at 2301 North Main Street, and then took his own life by shooting himself through the head.
Mrs. Beher died about an hour after the shooting.
Justice of the Peace Hurley returned an inquest verdict of murder and suicide.
The Beher home as at 3632 Calmont Avenue.

Two Cars Drove Up.

W. M. Alford, 1612 Elizabeth Boulevard, an employe at the drive-in stand, told Hurley that about noon Monday an automobile containing three women drove up to the stand and that almost immediately a second car driven by a lone man arrived.
The man, Alford related, went to the automobile containing the women, but found the car doors locked. He then talked to the woman in the rear seat and she finally left that car and walked to the automobile driven by the man.
"Suddenly the man pulled out a pistol and shot the woman through the stomach, and then shot himself in the head," Alford said.
The woman staggered to the drive-in stand, but the man fell dead, in the driveway. Alford reported that the two women in the other automobile drove off immediately.
Identified at Scene.
Beher whose body was taken to Shannon's North Side Funeral Home, and his wife were identified to police at the scene of the shooting.
Beher is a nephew of J. F. Beher, 825 East Mulkey Street, who said that his nephew borrowed his automobile Sunday and had not returned it. J. F. Beher said his nephew and his nephew's wife had "been having trouble lately."
Mrs. Beher filed suit for divorce from her husband last Monday and obtained a temporary restraining order to prevent his disposing of any community property. The suit was set in Seventeenth District Court.
Cal Estill, attorney for Mrs. Beher, said the pair had been having trouble for some time and the Mrs. Beher had told him Monday morning that her husband threatened to kill himself. They had been married about a year, Estill said. Beher had a son by a former marriage.
Mrs. Beher was employed at Armour & Co. Beher had been employed by the Texas and Pacific Railway for 19 years.

Went to Lunch with Mrs. Beher.

Two other Armour & Co. employes, Mrs. Eddie Orand, 3420 West Sixth Street, and Mrs. Billie Lou Molder, 2208 Roosevelt Avenue, had gone to lunch with Mrs. Beher.
They told City Detective Hoote they had no idea Beher was following them until they had turned into the drive at the stand.
Beher left two notes in a writing tablet in the car he was using. Both noted were dated March 1.
The first, addressed to Beher's attorney, Will R. Parker, said: "Mr. Parker, this gun (a .45 caliber revolver) belongs to Wolf & Klar. I paid $5 down on it so take it back so their will be more money left for Bobby Jack. Also the car I'm driving belongs to my uncle. Please see it gets to him." The note was signed "Fred Beher."
The second note, signed "Fred" was addressed to "friends of Atha Lee's." One paragraph addressed to "Mrs. Parker" said: "Go get Bobby Jack. He is in school."
