Route 61 crash at Darkwater
DARKWATER - A Frackville woman died following a two-car crash at the intersection of Route 61 and Darkwater Road around 2:50 p.m. Friday. New Castle Township Patrolman Robert L. Kudel said the victim was Genevieve C. Micun, 71, of 334 W. Chestnut St.
She was pronounced dead at 4:03 p.m. at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center by Dr. Philip Ehrig.
The driver of the station wagon that collided with Micun's car, Donna Brenneman, 35, of Pottsville, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Pottsville Hospital.
The accident happened as Micun attempted to cross over into Route 61's northbound lanes from Darkwater Road, Kudel said. Micun's driver's side door was struck by the southbound vehicle driven by Brenneman. Micun's car was almost bent in half from the impact and damaged beyond repair, Kudel said.
Brenneman's car sustained severe front end damage, he said. Police are still trying to figure out exactly why the accident happened, Kudel said.
"It seems that (Micun's car) stalled out. But we're not sure yet," he said. Micun had to be extracted from her vehicle by firefighting crews, Kudel said.
Traffic in both directions was backed up on Route 61 for about a hour while the scene was being cleared, he said.
Saint Clair, Frackville and Blythe Township police, and Saint Clair A Ambulance assisted at the scene.
