6. Obituary: The Daily Item on 27 Dec 1939 in Sunbury, Northumberland, PA. 11 JOHN B. BUCHER, 78, DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Member Of Old Family, Long Prominent in Community Affairs, Succumbs at North Front Street Home.
John B. Bucher, who took an active part in community affairs for half a century, died at his home, 912 N. Front Street, at 12:30 o'clock this morning, after a lingering illness.
He was aged 78 years, 11 months, and 8 days. In spite of failing health, he continued his business activities in real estate and insurance until the present year. One of his last acts was the presentation of a strip of ground to the Veterans of Foreign Wars to aid in their development of a memorial grove for departed members at their home on Shikellamy Avenue.
A member of one of the first families to settle in Sunbury, Mr. Bucher was a keen student of local history and conversant with the record of its people for a century and a half. He was a member of the fourth generation of his family to live here, the first two pioneers from Switzerland having come during the Indian occupation of the Susquehanna Valley.
Henry Bucher, one of the brothers, built a house at a spot now occupied by a business block at the southwest corner of Third and Walnut Streets. He owned nearly all the land between the Shamokin Creek and the river, including all the lower part of the present city. His youngest son, Francis, married Mary Ann Masser, a member of another old Sunbury family. He was one of the last to engage in tanning in the borough. Of the eight children of this couple, John Weiser Bucher attained unusual distinction.
He served in Company C, 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers, in the Civil War. He helped to organize William A. Bruner Post 335, Grand Army of the Republic, and served as its quartermaster for 15 years. He also compiled a complete roster of the post and became an authority on local history, accumulating much material which he passed on to his son, John B. Bucher.
He served Sunbury as chief burgess and the county as deputy prothonotary, register and recorder, and deputy treasurer. He was the first secretary and treasurer of the Sunbury Trust & Safe Deposit Company, now merged with the First National Bank. His first wife was Hester A. Beard, daughter of James Beard, county prothonotary. To this union were born three children, the second of whom, John Beard Bucher, was born January 19, 1861.
He twice remarried, and one of the children of the third union, Mrs. Sarah Helen Stewart, wife of Scott Stewart, of San Diego, California, is now the sole survivor of the family. In early years, John B. Bucher engaged in business as a merchant. In later years, he entered the insurance and real estate business, in which he attained success.
He is survived by two children, George H. Bucher, president of the Westinghouse Electric Company, at Pittsburgh, and Francis E. Bucher, of Sunbury, associated with the Packard Motor Company; six grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Stewart, of San Diego.
For several months past, his son Francis E. Bucher has been recuperating from an extended illness. Mr. Bucher was a loyal and active member of Sunbury Lodge 267, B.P.O. Elks. His family were among the earliest members of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence, 912 N. Front Street. Rev. A.G. Van Elden, rector of St. Matthew's Church, will officiate. Burial will be made in Pomfret Manor Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ely Blow, Walter E. Bastian, Frank M. Haas, Frederick Haas, Carl Beck, and David Sellers.
