8. Book: Book of Biographies: This Volume Contains Biographical Sketches of Leading Citizens of Berks County, Pa, Part 1, 1898. 16 The family was founded in Chester County shortly before the War of the Revolution by Joseph Paxson, who came from New Hope, Bucks County, to Sadsbury township, where he purchased a large tract of land, and established a homestead upon which he lived the remainder of his life.
Upon that homestead, Jonathan Paxson, was born and reared. When Jonathan Paxson grew to manhood he adopted the pursuits of an agriculturist, and spent the remainder of his life on the old homestead. He was a quiet, unassuming man of industrious habits, and as an adherent of the Quaker Church he lived a consistently religious and useful career. His marriage with Catherine Beecher resulted in the birth of eleven children.
9. Book: Sketches - Pennsylvania Families, 1970. 17 PAXSON There were four Paxson brothers who left their homes in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, England and joined the Quaker Colony of William Penn, which came to Pennsylvania in 1682. The elder brother Henry came on the ship Samuel. There is no record when William and James came. Their request for removal from the Coleshill meeting into the province of Pennsylvania is dated 2d mo. 3d, 1682. Thomas started with Henry but died at sea as did also the wife of Henry and son. Henry's daughter came with him and married but left no heirs. Henry however had accumulated over 1200 acres of land, which he bequeathed to his various nephews. They all bought land in Bucks County, Pa. and settled at what is now Langhorne, Pa. James Paxson, our direct American ancestor, was born in England, was married to Jane Guerdon, he died in 1722, they had four children, Sarah, William, Henry and James. William is our line born October 25, 1670, married December 20, 1695, Abigail Pownall. She was born in England, December 4, 1677 and came over with her family, her father Charles was killed by a falling tree two weeks after their arrival. William and Abigail Paxson had eight children. Thomas the fifth child was born September 20, 1712 and married in 1732, Jane Canby, she was born April 12, 1710 and died in 1789. The daughter of Thomas Canby and Mary Oliver Mary Oliver's parents Evan Oliver and his wife Jean came over on the ship "Welcome" on which William Penn came. Giving all his descendants the right to join the Welcome Society. The oldest of Thomas' children was Joseph born September 10, 1733 and died in 1808, he married June 28, 1758 Mary Heston born November 13, 1740 and died March 9, 1829. She was the daughter of Jacob and Mary Warner Heston and a sister to Edward Warner Heston of Hestonville. Joseph in 1788 sold his land in Solebury, Bucks County and moved with 13 of his 15 children ( one died young and Benjamin being married ) to Sadsbury, Chester County, Pa. where he and his son Joseph bought nearly 1000 acres of land. The home is still standing and is known as the house with the big chimneys. Of the fifteen children of Joseph and Mary Paxson we descend from the tenth child, Jonathan. Jonathan was born May 26, 1775 and died September 14, 1841. He married in May 1804 Catharine Beecher, our one Pennsylvania Dutch ancestor. She was the daughter of John Beecher and Mary Albert and was born May 11, 1784 and died December 5, 1855. They lived in the home place and my grandfather John Jefferson Paxson was born there. Another descendant told me the housewives came from far and near to see Mrs. Paxson's store bought carpet, the first in that neighborhood. It came from Philadelphia.
Jonathan married Catharine Beecher, daughter of John Beecher Sr. and Mary Ann Albrecht, on 4 May 1804.1 (Catharine Beecher was born on 11 May 1784 in , Lancaster, PA,1 18 died on 5 Dec 1855 in Atglen, Chester, PA 1 7 8 9 18 and was buried in Sadsbury Township: East Sadsbury Friends Graveyard, Chester, PA 8 9 18.)
