Willard Beecher, Former Marion Man, and Wife Head Discussion at Meeting.
Willard Beecher, former Marion man who a year ago became consulting psychiatrist at the Dalton school in New York City, considered one of the two leading pioneering schools in progressive education, and his wife, who is a teacher at the school, conducted a roundtable discussion of psychological solutions for treating mal-adjustments, last night at a gathering of young people of college age at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Baker of 695 Mt. Vernon avenue.
The group of young people was composed of former Thomas A. Edison Junior High school pupils who are now in college or who will enter college next year, and in addition, James E. Frew, principal of the Edison school, Miss Mary Jo Stafford, a member of the faculty, Miss Grace Colvin, visiting teacher and Mrs. Baker's mother, Mrs. Jessie Simmons, were present.
Mr. Beecher and his wife are spending the holidays with Mrs. John Beicher of 300 Pearl street. Their outstanding work was recognized by the International Journal of Individual Psychology, top ranking publication in its field, when the first and second quarterly issues of 1937 carried their two-part story, "Building Social Awareness in School."
Mr. Beecher said he centers his whole philosophy of life on one responsibility which each individual has: to forget personal gain and concentrate on contributing his very best to society and mankind in general. Insanity is never inherited, he said, but comes when people fail to contribute to society and become self-centered.
All mentally normal children have the ability to make "A" grades in their studies, in his belief, and the reason that some do not is because they lack interest in the particular study or studies.
When confronted with the problem of helping a failing individual the psychiatrist is obliged not only to point out the person's mistaken concept of life, but also to educate the person in social awareness, Mr. Beecher said. The pampered child or adult strives for attention, is self-centered an dfails to contribute much toward the welfare of his fellowman, he said.
Faculty members present discussed their "problem child" situations with Mr. Beecher and sought his advice on how to proceed with the maladjusted child.
After Mr. Beecher had completed his talk, the group organized and decided to make the group a permanent organization, meeting each year during Christmas vacation and at the close of college in June.
