NEW YORK - How Mrs. Edith Beecher acted as a detective was revealed today when she was granted a decree of divorce from her husband, Dr. Samuel E. Beecher, a dentist with offices at 55 State street, by Judge Adelor S. Petit. The decree was granted on statutory grounds. Beyond filing an answer in which he denied his wife's allegations, Dr. Beecher offered no defense to the proceedings. When the suit was filed a short time ago both Dr. and Mrs. Beecher, who lived at 901 North State street, denied that there was any trouble between them or that they were the persons named in the bill. Later it was learned that they had agreed to deny everything in order to avoid publicity.
On the stand Mrs. Beecher told the story of how, becoming suspicious of her husband during his conversation over heard him making an appointment over the telephone, she resolved to follow him until she learned either that her fears were ungrounded or that her husband was really unfaithful to her. The night of February 4, the date agreed upon by her husband during his conversation over the telephone which aroused the suspicions of the spouse, Mrs. Beecher, with two friends as witnesses - Joseph R. Rogers and J. S. Ward - waited in the shadow of the Masonic temple for Dr. Beecher.
At 8:30, according to her story, he arrived, meeting a few moments later a mysterious woman. When they left Mrs. Beecher, with her two assistants, dogged the footsteps of her husband and the "mysterious woman" to the Randolph hotel, 70 Randolph street, where they were seen to enter. Mrs. Beecher waited fifteen minutes and then left with Rogers. Ward, according to his testimony, followed Dr. Beecher into the hotel, where they took an elevator and went upstairs to the hotel offices. The witness testified that after he had seen Dr. Beecher registered there he also went home. By agreement Dr. Beecher will pay his wife $60 a month alimony. He refused to discuss the decree.
